Florida Pulse gay club attacked in Orlando

There are multiple injuries after an attacker opened fire inside a gay nightclub in the Florida city of Orlando, police say.
The attacker is reported to be still inside the Pulse Club and to have taken hostages.
A bomb squad and hazardous material team are at the scene, the Associated Press reports. Orlando Police have urged people to stay away.

Some reports say at least 20 shots were heard inside the club.
Video footage being shared on social media showed dozens of emergency vehicles at the scene and people being treated on the pavements.

Muslim who murdered 20 in Florida gay nightclub identified as Omar Mateen, a US citizen

Omar Mateen has been named as the gunman involved in the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, CBS News reports.

Police said at least 20 people were killed and about 40 more were wounded in the attack early Sunday morning.

Mateen is a U.S. citizen from Port St. Lucie, Florida, according to CBS News.

1. The Gunman Exchanged Fire With a Police Officer Outside the Club Before Going Inside & Taking Hostages

The gunman, Omar Mateen, was engaged in a shootout with police outside the night club at about 2 a.m., police said at a press conference. Mateen then entered the night club and took hostages.

He was armed with an assault-type rifle, a handgun and a “suspicious device,” authorities said.
2. He Was Killed by a SWAT Team After Police Decided to Rescue the 30 Hostages

Mateen died at the scene after he was shot by police. He had barricaded himself in the nightclub after opening fire. Witnesses reported that some of their friends were hiding in dressing rooms and bathrooms, trying to stay safe.

3. The FBI Has Said He May Have Leanings Toward Radical Islamic Ideology

FBI Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Ron Hopper said at a press conference that there are “some suggestions” the gunman “may have leanings” toward Jihadist ideology.

No Islamic terror groups, including ISIS, have taken credit for the attack.
4. The Gunman Was Organized & Well-Prepared

The FBI says the gunman was “organized and well-prepared.”

Police have not released further details about the plot or whether anyone else was involved….

Florida nightclub shooting: 50 killed and 53 injured in 'act of terror' – rolling updates

Mayor Dyer confirmed to a press conference that there were 50 killed and 53 hospitalised in the shooting, not 20 killed and 42 hospitalised as initially reported by police.

John Mina, chief of police said that initially officers believed there were 20 dead. But now that they have been able to access the entirety of the building, they can confirm up to 50 people have been killed.

“There were more victims than originally thought. Once we were sure there were no devices and could go in confidently, we were able to see the number of victims,” said Mina.
