Australian elections on the 2nd of July

Announced by our Prime Minister today. Being a double dissolution all seats in both houses will be up for grabs. The best part of it is that it's all done and dusted in 44 days. There is little difference between the governing coalition and the opposition Labor Party in terms of policies. I have never been less excited about an election. Just the same, what little difference there is makes me hope that the latter will squeak in.

Its more than 44days. This a long campaign. 8 weeks officially, plus the next two weeks before the election can be called.

I think Turnbull has made a mistake calling a double-d. I also think Labor has a good chance of winning government. Turnbull and Morrisson have been all over the shop with policy.

Bill Shorten (ALP leader) has lifted his game, but I'm not sure whether it will be enough. From all accounts there will be some very murky preference deals involving the minor parties...

I think the union campaign will hammer the Coalition. The unions are the most effective campaigners of the lot of them.

Yeah it is ridiculous, but it keeps a lot of journalists, analysts, and editors in jobs. There's a joke that the next Presidential campaign starts the day after the election, except it's not a joke.

Yeah. They're pretty much campaigning all the time. I think we need four year terms. Give them a chance to actually govern instead of shallow campaigning shit.

In the Senate, I shall be voting for an eclectic bunch of minor parties (obviously excluding the right-wing nutters, but probably including the Sex Party...), and stuff both Labour and Liberal. The question will be to put the preferences in the best order...

I'm in a safe Liberal House of Reps seat, but I guess the Greens, even though they annoy me...
