Why are you voting for a Labor-Greens-Independent-Devil Worshiping-Baby Eating-Paedophile Coalition, Jim?!? We had three years of the most chaotic chaosy chaos under the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd-Green-Independent-Beezelbub-Marxist-Fascist alliance before super stable government returned in 2013.

Fuck all the cunts. Political despair has finally hit, 7 odd weeks into the campaign. To be honest, I'm surprised I lasted this long.

Yes. Fines.

After each election, the AEC will send a letter to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a valid and sufficient reason for failing to vote or pay a $20 penalty.

If, within the time period specified on the notice, you fail to reply, cannot provide a valid and sufficient reason or decline to pay the $20 penalty, then the matter may be referred to a court. If the matter is dealt with in court and you are found guilty, you may be fined up to $180 plus court costs and a criminal conviction may be recorded against you.

I forgot to vote in a state election once. I was on holiday down in Victoria. From memory I didn't get fined either.

Everyone over age 17 is required to vote. However, only one candidate appears on the ballot. Voting is designed to track who is and isn't in the country. Dissenting votes are possible but lead to repercussions for voters.
