Big night
....reminds me of Bob Rae in Ontario. ( NDP = labour in Canada ) Was in third place leading a party that had never formed a government and did not expect to.

Went to to bed and woke up as Premiere. ( Ontario economy about the same size as Aus - bit smaller )

The reigning Liberals ( think centrist left ) took the election, which they called unnecessarily at the end of summer, for granted and lost.
Bob woke up as premiere with no prep, no gov in waiting and the 1992 recession looming. Huge deficits both federal and provincal. He did "okay" but got tossed next round.

Canadians hate unnecessary elections and this one was purely political and the ruling party paid for it.

it happens again and again....fuckers waste public money on elections with litle or no purpose hoping to extend the mandate.

Trudeau tried it last year and went from majority to minority gov where any of the other parties could swing the balance. It's a good mix right now, the right wing is entirely neutered and the same NDP that Bob Rae led but federal this time is well led and supporting Trudeau policies.....sort of like Labour now...dependent on more progressives to get things done.....hey Germany has not had a majority gov since WWII.
I like minority gov.
We got universal health care, a better pension plan and the new flag passed under a minority gov way back when.

Labor will finish up with 76 seats. Unless it takes the risk of offering the speaker's chair to an independent or a green it will have to rely on one other vote from elsewhere to have bills passed in the lower house.
Well, they have their 76, but counting continues in Gilmore, with a real possibility of a Labor win there. Even with only 76, the speaker can cast a deciding vote if there is a tie in the house, so Labor may not have to rely on the Greens and/or independents to pass legislation. However, it would be wise of Albanese to discuss legislation with them, to cultivate them, because anything can happen to a slim majority during the 3 years ahead...
The bigger problem is in the Senate. The L/NP coalition will finish up with 31 seats, and Labor with 26. It will need the support of most of the 12 greens senators to get the go-ahead for its legislations, as the other five (with 71.1% of the senate votes counted, two seats are still undecided) senators are unlikely to give their assent.
Those figures may also change, but I agree it will be complex, with lots of behind the scenes negotiations happening...

It's probably a healthy part of democracy but it does slow things down ....harder to do long range planning with change of leaders so often...the one thing I don't admire about Aus gov set up is the 3 year lower house term. Leads to constant electioneering instead of governing.
Section 4 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms limits the term of any federal, provincial, or territorial parliament to a maximum of five years after the return of the writs of the last election.
I think is better. I'm not entirely sure that leadership voted in by the people is my preferred system ( look at the dumpf )

Senates are supposed to cushion that but we don't have an elected senate....it's appointed supposedly on merit  but it became a political football with each successive gov padding the senate ( which is lifetime with tons of perks ) to get a majority.
Trudeau finally stopped it all by making all his senate members independents and not subject to the party caucus.
The right wing tried for elected senators but the barrier to change in Canada is stupid high thanks to archaic rules harking back to the BNA ( British North America Act ) which is the founding document for Canada.
We only repatriated the constitution in 1982 ( Trudeaus father ) but Quebec has never signed off.

The governing document now tho is an addendum
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects a number of rights and freedoms, including freedom of expression and the right to equality. It forms part of our Constitution – the highest law in all of Canada – and is one of our country's greatest accomplishments.
which is brilliant and a model for many other countries who used to follow the US model...but it does not cover off a fundamental change of Parliament and getting Quebec onside with anything is a bridge too far.
We almost had it but a single dissenting indigenie in Manitoba started the ship sinking.
https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/ ... ake-accord

Herding cats comes to mind ...for instance we have no governing law for abortions beyond late term and it's left entirely to woman and her physician ....sometimes we get things correct. :coffee:

Looks like they've got the 77, so they can have an ALP speaker and still have a majority...

If he lives up to his rhetoric (which he won't) about changing politics in Australia, he will appoint Andrew Wilkie as speaker.

So we are having an energy crisis in Australia. While being one of the world's biggest suppliers of coal and natural gas, we are suffering shortages here (for some stupid reason we export most of it and then have to pay world market prices for our own coal/gas). A very cold few weeks has exacerbated the shortage.

Today the energy market regulator suspended the energy market and put price caps on wholesale energy prices and forced functioning generators to remain online and provide energy. Apart from SOCIALISM!!, this highlights the absurdity of privatisation of essential services. The energy market, as well as the telecommunications market, have been privatised over the last few decades. Both of these have stringent government dictates as to how they will operate. Telstra (the former government telecoms monopoly) was 51% sold off, and is forced by the government (despite the government not being majority shareholder) to provide telecom services to the vast rural sector of Australia for a loss. To be honest, I'm surprised any private entities go in for this sort of arrangement. You must provide services for a loss, or you'll lose your license! Seems it would have been better to leave these essential services in government hands. Perhaps if monopolisation is a concern, the private sector could compete with the public sector, just to keep the public sector from ossifying and wasting money on out of date systems and practices.

A club for pagans, witches and Satanists says its affiliation with the Adelaide University Union has been rejected because of a complaint its members may summon the devil onto campus.

"Even if we did want to summon Satan, it's not against university or union policy to do so, so it's still not really grounds to reject us," Adelaide University Occult Club president Ashley Towner said.
