An outback Queensland pub has banned emus after a spate of bad behaviour from the feathered guests.

The Yaraka Hotel, in remote south-west Queensland, has barricaded its entrances to keep the birds out.

The emus were hatched and raised in the town and have become a tourist highlight.

But the hotel's owner, Chris Gimblett, said they had recently learned to climb the front steps and were causing havoc.

"We didn't really want them becoming patrons in the hotel," he said.

"Because when they do get in here, they behave a bit badly."

The emus are known to target tourists, stealing food, drinks, car keys and generally making a mess.

"Their toileting [inside] is not particularly pleasant," Mr Gimblett said.

"That's the biggest problem — because they do toilet quite frequently."

Rope barriers have been erected at the entrances, along with signs asking tourists to help keep the emus out.

"They still hang around each gate, hoping that they'll be able to slip in when someone opens it up," he said.

"But so far we are winning the war."

I believe emus and humans can live together in harmony.

Their eggs are delish too, especially to birds of prey.

Ostrich Jims have never been popular. ;)

Of course not. You're not an Ostrich Jim.

Wasn't Ostrich Jim a DC superhero from the 70s aimed at the Australian market - paired in a crime-fighting duo with the Wallaroo Whirlwind? Never really caught on. :tea:

No. You are confusing him with the home-grown Captain Goodvibes, the Pig of Steel.

Skippy who? :ask:

Here's a short list of Oarstriah's superheroes:

1) For sheer badassery you can't go past Neddie. And there is nothing more archetypically Australian than a horse thief who was hanged for murder. We are genuinely proud of his behaviour.

2) Then there's Dame Nellie Melba, just to prove we haz the cultcha, though probably not as good as the dyke dwellers. Nellie represents our indefatigable determination to keep partying well after our pegs have given out. She had so many last concerts and comeback performances that "doing a Melba" has become turn of phrase meaning "refuses to fuck off gracefully".

3) Backing up the cultcha claim is Dame Edna Everage of Moonee Ponds. There is heated debate concerning her real life identity. Some say she is Barry Humphries. Others say she is not. I'm staying out of that shitfight, except to note that Edna and JimC have never been seen together in the same room.

4) The Jolly Swagman of billabong fame has lost some of his appeal, but he is still popular among conservative Australians with yearnings to be counted as members of the Aussie nobility on account of their ancestors having been bundled off to these fatal shores as Prisoners of her Majesty (POMs). Failing that, they put on their nostalgia hats and become the elite of the ockeraty while shedding tears about the lost glory days when this continent was a Grite Nition - Don Bradman, rebadged American cars, Rod Laver, SIx o' Clock Swill and all that.

5) rEvolutionist. Granted, he is not particularly well known outside the Kingscliff trailer park riffraff and his nearest dole office, but he is indubitably a legend in his own underpants.

Nellie was the inspiration for Peach Melba. too.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
