With the Australian Labor Party around ten percentage points ahead of the conservatives in the opinion polls, its leader, Bill Shorten, has become increasingly desperate about how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Most people were sceptical about whether he could come up with the goods, until the party conference. His policy announcement on the refugee issue turned out to be a stroke of genius. Insisting that the offshore concentration camps will remain and refugee boats will continue to be turned back on the one hand while accepting an additional 5000 asylum seekers on the other, he managed to seriously alienate both sides of the brown/black/yellow/brindle hordes argument. This may not be quite enough to lose the unloseable election, but he does have another card up his sleeve. In trying to straddle two chairs in regard to the giant Adani coal mining project proposal he is odds-on to disappoint both the environmentalists and the what's good for the economy is good for the people mob.

Realistically, we only have two possible election outcomes: Either Labor or the even more conservative so called Liberal/National Party coalition will form the next government. The Greens hardly even stand a chance of holding the balance of power. While I am still hoping for a Labor win, Shorten's policies really do take the shine off seeing the conservatives finally out on their ears.

Regarding asylum seekers Labor's keeping the same policy more or less as the Coalition so as to nullify it as an election issue. Spineless, but smart. Because of our compulsory preference voting any votes lost to the Greens will nearly always flow back.

Had a Merry Xmas email from my oldest friend today. We went to school together in Hong Kong so I’ve known him over 50 years ffs. Anyway he ended up living and working in London, where he started up an ‘exclusive’ travel agency. The lucky bugger landed a group of very rich Russians as clients back after the Wall fell and seems to have got pretty rich himself on the back of that. Part of his job was ‘researching’ destinations in exotic parts of the world...well someone has to do it I suppose.

The point of this is her retired four years ago. We had a great reunion do before he left for where his wife is from - the East coast of Oz. They have a flat overlooking about ten miles of sand and seem to spend most of their time driving up and down the coast from one boozy barbecue party to the next.

I got his email at ten or so this morning. It was still dark and pissing down here.

Some people have the knack of making the right choices in life.

That's very unusual - most snakes are fussy, and only go for live prey - people who keep them as pets usually have to supply live mice or rats...
