Ah yes, the Dutch Empire. The Empire with a heart of gold.

Is the gold easy to find? or the opals for that matter... it's easy to bypass a land whose resources are not obvious.

They did not. The Dutch were not interested in land. The Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie was only interested in trade. The earned more than enough that way. Occupying countries was expensive and costs time. You needed armies and navies. They just had forts and harbours all over the world and traded even with Japan.
Yeah, one of those days, I'll have to study that bit of history, how is it that the Dutch kept access to the closed Japan through one port while the Spaniards and POrtuguese were forbidden to come at all.

You will never hear me say that. We were as bigger bastards as the next one. Our empire was tiny. Indonesia and Surinam. Indonesia was run by the Indonesians. Surinam was like its British and French counterparts a black stain.

I’ve read a bit. Catholicism had a lot to do with it. The Jesuits were some of the first foreigners to land it seems and they made many converts and quite quickly. The Japanese ended up banning Christianity and threw out the priests because they were alarmed at their own political system being undermined. They killed quite a few too. The Dutch being Protestants were easier to convince that they didn’t have the right to force their religion on everyone they came into contact with and were allowed to trade, under strict rules about the amount of contact with locals.

Which is pretty ironic when you see how much proselytism modern protestants have been doing since the XIXth century.

Yep. The island created by the Japanese for the Dutch traders was all they had.

The gold was just lying around on the surface in the form of giant nuggets. Not sure about the opals. But opal mining isn't hard.
