I've just learned about The Battle of Brisbane, a riot between Australians and America military servicemen occupying Brisbane during WWII. Quite an interesting read. One particular point of contention, a thing that irked the Aussies, was the way we treated (or mistreated, rather) our own black soldiers.

A 23-year-old man's arm has been severed below the elbow in overnight Territory Day celebrations at Virginia, in the rural area outside Darwin.

A spokesperson for St John's Ambulance told the ABC the man was taken to hospital in a "very serious" condition.

He was suffering injuries extending from his elbow to his chest, to undergo immediate surgery.

The spokesperson confirmed the man "lost his hand" in the incident.

Darwin Police Watch Commander Sean Patterson said a second man was located nearby with injuries to his lower body.

The 23-year-old remains in a serious condition, while the second man is in a "serious but stable" condition at the Royal Darwin Hospital, according to NT Health.

Last night was the only night of the year during which territorians are permitted to own and light fireworks and is done to mark the anniversary of the Northern Territory's transition to self-government.

While celebrations in Central Australia were muted by cold and rainy conditions, emergency services had a busy night in Darwin, its satellite city of Palmerston and the surrounding region.

Fire crews responded to nearly 100 incidents throughout the NT, with cars, bins and bushland all set ablaze during the evening.

We were there a few years back, in a hotel room overlooking a linear park along the foreshore during Territory Day celebrations. It was utterly insane - groups of revellers would be firing powerful rockets horizontally at other groups! I had to retreat inside from my 4th floor balcony when explosions got close!
