Well, giant wave surfers perhaps, but not just your ordinary bloke or bird on a board... ;)

(except for ignoring the slavering teeth of Great White Sharks)
Jim they are not surfers. Surfing is for lunatics like so many dare devil sports.
Dutch definitions are the best definitions. We must therefore defer to them at all times.

With that in mind I looked up the Dutch definition for "surfer". The Wikipedia describes Van Dale Groot woordenboek van de Nederlandse taal (Van Dale's Great Dictionary of the Dutch Language) as the leading dictionary of the Dutch language, so I went with that.

This is what Van Dale Groot woordenboek van de Nederlandse taal has on "surfer": "(de; m,v; meervoud: surfers) 1iem. die surft". Google Translate renders that as "(de; m, v; plural: surfers) 1im. who surfs". I guess that 1iem is an abbreviation for "someone" or an equivalent word. Missing: "lunatic", "daredevil" or any reference to size of wave or amount of risk involved.

As for me, I regard anyone who regularly rides waves as a hobby or professionally as a surfer. I counted myself as a surfer until 30 years ago, even though I rarely surfed waves over two metres in height and never ever considered getting anywhere near the types of waves I linked to in a previous post. I may be a lunatic, but not on account of riding waves, but I was a surfer on account of riding waves.

Like riding a bike without a helmet? :tea:

* - I actually don't wear a helmet when I ride my bike, because I'm a goddamn sovereign citizen who can do what he goddamn likes!! I also only ride on bike paths, so i'm safe from lunatic drivers.

Not to scale. The number of all lunatics far exceeds the number of all surfers.

When you've lived as sheltered a life as Scot has, everything seems dangerous.

From what he told us about his past it is difficult to conclude that Scot has lived a sheltered a life. Upping stakes as a teenager and moving from Scotland to Netherlands does not support that hypothesis anyway.

Perhaps his days as a rugby player explain his bizarre mental processes. If he was a forward his head may have been squashed too often. If he was a back he might have experienced too many spear tackles.

Thanks for (not) defending me. Thanks to rugby, I was a lock most of the time, I did end up with tinnitus which has been a curse all my life.

A sheltered life :ab: I wish that was true but far from it is the nearer the truth TB. I have had a roller coaster life with the last ten years the most stable.

Canberra man does DIY surgery after waiting years for medical help
An electrician says he grew so sick of waiting for elective surgery at Canberra Hospital that he took matters into his own hands, using a utility knife to excise a painful grape-sized cyst that was affecting his work.

"I got sick of it," he said.

"I grabbed a Stanley knife and heated up the blade and put a cut into my wrist.

"I squeezed and popped out the cyst.

"I disinfected it and put some antiseptic, put a bandaid over it and that was it."
