Well they're economically liberal. But generally socially conservative. It is described as a broad church, though, with some true economic and social liberals, and a bunch of social conservatives. Then they coalition with the Nationals who are socially conservative agrarian socialists. Basicly the whole lot is a giant contradiction.

Liberals were historically right wing. In Northern European Social Democratic countries the right wing parties are generally referred to as liberal parties. Only in America does liberal mean left wing but in a system where everything is a free for all parties move around on the right wing. There does not exist a left wing party. Even Sanders would find himself on the right in most NESD countries. America as moved so far right that Attila the Hun would feel at home there.
