That idiot is a cop, you expect any more brains and sensitivity than that from the simians wearing that uniform?

I was in exactly the same position about 20 years ago. No gun, of course. We had a feral cat in our street, and it had a litter of kittens in my back yard. I collected the kittens, put them in a plastic bin, and drove them to the SPCA. I got treated by SPCA staff as if I was the devil incarnate, and they extracted $50 from me as a fee for humanely euthanasing them. My whole visit was soured by their general nastiness.

I went out and bought a cage trap, and set it up for the mother. Caught it within a few days with a bit of meat as bait. I put the whole trap in a plastic rubbish bag, and tipped chloroform onto a rag and put it in the bag also (not in physical contact with the cat) and sealed the bag. An hour later, I buried the dead cat. My attitude now is that I will not ever touch the SPCA again with a 40 foot barge pole. Arseholes!

You let them coerce you into paying? I'd have dropped the bin and said "bye" and walked out the door.

And any real man has to be prepared to shoot his own dog. As I had to do. After taking him to the Humane Society so they could torture him for 20 minutes with a needle trying to get a vein. He was crying and snarling and biting at the tech and I couldn't take it. He'd never snarled or bitten at anyone, ever, in 16 years. So I took him home, comforted him, let him out in the yard and waited for him to fall asleep on the grass in the sunshine in his favorite observation spot. Then I took my .17HMR rifle, walked quietly up to him and shot him once in the head while he was sleeping. It was much more humane than what they did to him at the Humane Society, but if I'd told anyone about it at the time, they would have arrested me for doing so. Asshats.

The chloroform was a good idea, but in some places you actually are not allowed to kill a domestic pet at all. Any self-help solution, no matter how painless and humane, will be judged to be "animal abuse" and is often classified as a FELONY. In such places just dump the cat on the doorstep and walk away.

I put down hundreds and hundreds of animals in the decade that I was a vet tech. It's usually fast and painless, but I have horror stories. I've also had to shoot a few dogs that had been hit by cars and were suffering. One of them was my own. It sucked, but their suffering sucked even harder.

They probably deserved it as they were probably smoking weed or socialist or something.

Sadly true. If they had walked like pugnacious libertarians this would never have happened. Their fault.
