Treasure Hunt: Bitcoins in Landfill, Wales

Post by Clinton Huxley » Thu Nov 28, 2013 8:06 am

A chap in Wales has accidentally thrown away a hard drive containing a "wallet" with £4 Million of bitcoins. This is now, apparently, under 4ft of household waste at a landfill site in Newport.

Get your gloves, surgical masks and anti-bacterial spray and I'll see you there....

AND MERRY XMAS TO ONE AND All!

Fuck, what a disaster. I didn't read the article. Is there anyway he can dig around and get it back?

Ah, the tenuous and intangible nature of our modern existence, hanging by a thread from the invisible and unreadable alignments of electrons, so easily lost.

So true. I often think about this with my photos. Despite all sorts of backups, it's a major task keeping duplicates both on site and off site, and keeping them all up to date with each other.

Gives a new meaning to Bitcoin mining, I suppose. :tea:

I never thought he'd hang around. He seemed to have an ulterior motive. Having said that, the bitcoin price has gone absolutely mental in the last two or three months.
It plunged to just over £100 after he started posting, but it's taken off like a rocket now, and is now just under £1,000 on the cashing out exchange.
Wouldn't it be nice to know the future eh?
Of course, now that the bitcoin that he was offering to donate is worth a grand, maybe he's less keen on giving it away.
I would be.

So true. I often think about this with my photos. Despite all sorts of backups, it's a major task keeping duplicates both on site and off site, and keeping them all up to date with each other.
I was down at the camera shop the other day trying to peddle my Mamiya 645 Pro system in exchange for a cheap studio strobe setup so I can take eBay photos and the owner said he didn't even want it. A system I paid nearly $6000 for is essentially worthless now even though it's in perfect condition. So I started shopping for a Mamiya 645AFD body which is a later version of what I have but which will take a digital back after I found a Kodak 11MP digital back for it on eBay. It would cost me at least $1500 to do the changeover to make the glass usable.

So anyway I was talking with the owner about how much I miss chemistry, negatives and printing. I said I thought that soon there will be a huge gap in the photographic record of humanity because everything taken since digital was invented will soon become lost to us through obsolescence, technological advancement, or the failure of a microscopic byte on a disk drive.

If I could afford it I'd love to set up a good old fashioned B&W lab to make archival large-format photos, platinum, palladium, gold, etc. so I someday I'd be famous for nothing more than creating photographs that will last two centuries or more.

You'll not find me buying bitcoins until they come up with a physical media I can bury in the backyard and dig up a thousand years from now that still has value. I think gold fits that bill pretty nicely.

Jeez, if I had money, I'd buy it off you. I bought a Pentax 645 a few years ago before the uptick in interest in medium format film, but only have a single lens for it.

People are still doing it. It's like vinyl records. There'll always be a community of enthusiast.
