Executions on hold

Post by Blind groper » Sat Nov 23, 2013 8:10 pm

A piece of good news for those, like me, who think that executing criminals is barbaric.

Apparently the USA executions political machine is having problems accessing the lethal drugs they inject into their victims. Some of the traditional suppliers of sodium pentathol and pentobarbital are now refusing to supply the American penal authorities, because they do not want to be a part of that barbaric practice.

Cheers to those who have a conscience!

Maybe they'll adopt inert gas asphyxiation in the long term?

Yes, I read the same article. Likely to only be a technical hitch, though, the death penalty states have a lot of pressure from their conservative voters to get the death machines up and running again one way or another...

As Jim says, this in itself will be viewed as just a hitch, and is not unlikely to lead to any general soul-searching. And unfortunately, there will always be people prepared to supply those drugs.

Missouri to execute inmate using drugs from secret supplier. Many of the drugs used to execute people are manufactured in EU countries, which refuse to supply the drugs for this purpose. Therefore, states are turning to compounding pharmacies to make batches of these drugs on an as needed basis. These pharmacies are not very well regulated and quality of the end product is not always reliable.

Which means that executions may not be quick or painless. "Cruel and unusual!"

Should pharmacists refuse to compound these drugs?

If they feel the request for the drugs isn't legal. Plus given the record of many of these pharmacies, there is no guarantee that the drugs will work as they are supposed to work. The drugs are compounded, but not subjected to any sort of testing, they way mass-produced drugs are.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/15/justice/s ... ion-drugs/
States have been forced to try new drug combinations or go to loosely regulated compounding pharmacies that manufacturer variations of the drugs banned by the larger companies. The suit against Texas alleges the state corrections department falsified a prescription for pentobarbital, including the patient name as "James Jones," the warden of the Huntsville Unit "where executions take place," according to court documents. Additionally, the drugs were to be sent to "Huntsville Unit Hospital," which, the documents say, "has not existed since 1983."

Somehow injections are seen as more humane. There is nothing wrong with CO gas. But I guess it reminds of gas chambers. At the least you would need a mask to administer it. Like an oxygen mask.
