Crane collapses on cabinet office in Westminster

A crane has collapsed on to the roof of the cabinet office during high winds in central London.

The machine fell on the Westminster building at about 06:50 GMT. The building was evacuated, but no injuries have been reported.

Rail services across London have been disrupted because of the storm passing across parts of England and Wales.

Gusts of up to 70mph (112km/h) have been recorded at Heathrow, where up to 130 flights have been cancelled.

Oh dear. What a shame. The propaganda machine will have to relocate. Slowed but not stopped.

Maybe the office was empty.

It's a shame they weren't all in it together.

Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg has been forced to abandon his monthly press conference, after a crane collapsed on the roof of the Cabinet Office.

The government has been grappling with the implications of the St Jude's Storm battering southern Britain this morning but faced a direct impact of its own when the crane buckled in gusting winds in central London.

The incident is thought to have happened at 06:50 GMT this morning. Construction Enquirer reported the crane had been due to be dismantled this weekend - but the process had been put off because of the bad weather.

Clegg had been hoping to spend the morning answering questions from journalists exploring the extent to which he disagrees with David Cameron.

An aide reported that Mr Clegg's notes for the press conferences had just come through from Tory head office when the incident occurred and were accidentally left on the printer when an evacuation was ordered by security staff..
