Costa Rica poachers 'kill turtle activist'

An environmentalist campaigning for the protection of endangered sea turtles in Costa Rica has been found dead in a suspected killing by smugglers.

Jairo Mora was reportedly found face down with his hands tied on Moin beach, 170km (105 miles) east of the capital, San Jose.

Vanessa Lizano, the owner of the turtle sanctuary where Mr Mora worked, said he had been killed because of his work.

Sea-turtle eggs are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world.

Ms Lizano told the BBC: "Jairo went on patrol with some volunteers and they were attacked by armed men.

"It was him they wanted, because he was the one who was always looking after the nests."

Ms Lizano said that poachers in Costa Rica can make up to $300 (£200) per day smuggling turtle eggs in the black market.

She said they had received many threats over the years because of their work at the sanctuary.

Is there any evidence to back this suspicion of murder by turtle egg poachers?

Could be a publicity stunt for to get government action on poachers?

If it is it's pretty elaborate.

I didn't see any reason they'd assume it was the poachers though. He's one guy. How many nests can he guard at any time?

He's got volunteers? These don't come cheap in Costa Rica. :coffee:

I'm sure the local people are too busy poaching turtle eggs for two hundred and fifty American dollars every day to sign up for his cause.

I'm assuming anyway. It's normally China.

I've seen China cited elsewhere.

I think we can safely say that the investigation has moved on beyond merely suspecting that he is dead, to being sure he is dead.

The suspicion is "who", not "how", Cormac. They don't think he committed suicide.

I wouldn't have thought so. Costa Rica is one of the best countries in the world for environmentalism. I don't think they could achieve that without a large percentage of the population being behind it.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

It's also the safest of the Central American countries for tourists, unless things have changed recently.

Yes. I'm being pedantic. :)

I didn't, for example, think that it was the smugglers who suspected that Mr Mora had been killed.
