Swimmer mauled to death by Great White Shark

A swimmer has been mauled to death by a 14ft shark - believed to be a Great White - in New Zealand today.
Adam Strange, 47, was attacked and pulled under water about 200metres from Auckland’s Muriwai Beach at around 1.30pm in front of hundreds of beach tourists.
Up to three more sharks were said to have been drawn to the attack as police officers fired at least 20 shots in a desperate bid to rescue him.

The last person killed by a shark in NZ was 45 years ago, and there are doubts about that one.

However, it is very unlikely that this death was due to a shark being hungry. The body was ripped up, but nothing missing. The shark did not swallow even a morsel. It is very probable that humans are not on the shark's menu.

My own feeling is that it was probably a case of curiosity. The sea was quite calm, and there is no doubt in my mind that the shark could tell that the swimmer was not a seal. However, the shark might have mouthed the swimmer as part of its investigation. Not surprisingly, when a person is mouthed by a Great White, he/she will thrash around. That thrashing would result in massive injury.
