Paddy Power To Keep The Lights On.

Post by Clinton Huxley » Thu Jan 24, 2013 2:37 pm

Was reading in the papers about a scheme to build a series of wind turbines in the Irish Midlands, to generate power to export to dear old Blighty. Each one will be 600ft tall, taller than Blackpool Tower, because there isn't much wind where they are being sited. Where else would you put a wind turbine but somewhere with not much wind?

Anyway, was wondering what our friends in the Dominion thought about it? Is the Irish version of the Daily Mail up in arms about the effect on house prices?

News of it doesn't seem to have reached the chattering classes* here yet.

Should this be moved to a serious area? :ask:

If you do move it to another area, I hope the electrons will be shuffled using sustainable electricity

If you lot build these turbines to the west of us, does this mean we get less wind in Bighty?

Won't the Joule effect destroy the power in transit across the Irish sea?

There are already other undersea/long-distance power cables in use, so I assume this is not an issue. :dunno:

Ireland a lot more rural than the UK so I assume it could annoy more people.

Personally if someone UKIP/Tory/werewolf rural little Englander want's to complain about wind farms being built near his house, I would just build it on top of it

They'll likely use HVDC submarine transmission lines. A proven technology, the longest of which is currently the Xiangjiaba–Shanghai HVDC system which is somewhere about 2000km long.

I heard about this on the radio yesterday and the guy they got in to explain the plan had me cringing. He kept talking about them "pumping" electricity through cables. :fp:

Ultimately yes. I believe there are studies that predict considerable climate change effects coming from the use of wind turbines on a huge scale. Something for nothing just doesn't exist.
