David Cameron's daughter Nancy left behind at pub

David Cameron and his wife, Samantha, left their eight-year-old daughter, Nancy, in a pub after having Sunday lunch, Downing Street has confirmed.

She is reported to have spent about 15 minutes at the Plough Inn at Cadsden in Buckinghamshire, before Mr Cameron returned to collect her.

Number 10 says the couple were "distraught" when they realised Nancy was not with them.

It said it happened "a couple of months ago".

The pub is near Mr Cameron's country residence at Chequers.

The Camerons were at the pub with Nancy and their other children Arthur, six, and 22-month-old Florence, as well as two other families.

After leaving, Mr Cameron went home in one car with his bodyguards and thought Nancy was with his wife and their other children in another car.

Mrs Cameron had assumed her eldest daughter was with her father. The mistake was discovered when they got home. When the prime minister returned to collect Nancy he found her helping staff.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The prime minister and Samantha were distraught when they realised Nancy wasn't with them.

"Thankfully when they phoned the pub she was there safe and well. The prime minister went down straight away to get her."

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles - who is promoting a scheme to give English councils a financial incentive to deal with so-called "troubled families" - was asked on BBC Radio 5 live if he drew parallels between troubled families and parents who inadvertently left their children in a pub.

"We're definitely not talking about that - mainly for my job security," he replied.

Mr Pickles was also asked about the incident during a BBC News Channel interview, saying: "I'm very glad that Nancy was missing for only 15 minutes. It could happen to anybody, it must be any families' nightmare."

Actually Rum, I am not certain it is a fact and nor should you be. A vague report of something is not a fact and as I said, I suspect it is a pseudo-event. No eyewitness comments, no embarrassed bumbling comment after it was revealed from an original source but an "official" announcement about something not reported in the first place?

What the game is I have no idea, but that doesn't necessitate that it is genuine. Why would someone in his position have something so negative about himself publicly announced like this without any reason?

What I don't get is how the place would not have been covered by security personnel, and the act of forgetfulness noticed instantly and the kid taken in charge by (dang, what's the British agency that does what the US Secret Service does?)

Not sure why you are pressing this. I heard Eric Pickles talking about it on Radio 4 this morning as 'fact'. You may wish to discuss the definition of that word I suppose..

Depends if that was in their job description. I think it's one of those things that's hard to foresee happening, but is obvious in hindsight.

These things happen. My mom once accidentally locked herself out of the car while my brother who was a baby was still in it. She had to wait until the local car thief, a distant relative, could come and break into the car.

I'd imagine you'd be pressing your staff to be as attentive and on the ball as fucking possible. So then you've got the security blokes who's job it is to keep them protected, that's two lines of defense, then you've got the other families they were dining with, then you've got any other folk that might have been in their if they were allowed.

I'm supposed to believe that not one person noticed The Prime Minister leaving his little girl behind? No one? If it was some pleb sure, but the Prime Minister? I'm not buying it.
