Believe it or not, there are still pubs running that don't even do food.

Old pub has just reopened in my neck of and they are very particular about not serving food

There's a market for foody pubs and non-foody. If the pub becomes effectively food only, it's lost, and is just a restaurant with a bar. But in general, if food gives profits, it's good for everybody, as it provides jobs and keeps pubs open that might otherwise close.

I know of lots of good pubs that do well on food. Generally, they have separate food areas, but not necessarily. I suppose the dividing line comes where non-eating customers have a decent area to drink, and seating and tables for drinkers, who are not eating.

I was thinking in terms of Weatherspoons being a typical pub these days and some ye old northerner pub with 70 years in flat caps freezing outside with their fags being a 'non-food' pub

I've spiked coffee with applejack (or more precisely calva), brandy, whisky, rum... maybe I ought to try and see what it tastes like with gin?

Do they at least have crisps, peanuts or something?
Long drinking sessions demand that you have something to ballast your stomach, and there are those animated ones where you end up getting peckish.

I thought alcohol has the same affect

When you're drunk, you still are under the impression of being able to meaningfully communicate, in a night club, you are physically prevented.

Depends what you want to say. Body language and eyes can say a lot.
And I've seen young girls actually talking on the phone, next to gigantic speakers blasting out music.

And, if you have to shout in their ear, you often get a tit poking you in the chest.
There's lots of ways of getting the message.
