You Brits are just so awesome. Not taken in by lowly things like flags.... It must be wonderful not to have to muck about with the hoi polloi.

Most flags here are made in China just like yours and probably in the same factory. :smoke:

Just going off observation. When I'm over there I see scores of US flags on buildings, in gardens, by front doors, on cars, to stars/stripes motifs on from ice-cream cone holders. Over here one might see a couple of Union Flags in a town, usually on public buildings, and very occasionally in a window of a dodgy looking house - pretty much the only time you see them en masse is for some Royal parade.

I like the "suppose" and "pretend". Very telling phrasing.

No offense meant.

I suspect, though, that you notice it more about the US because you are just visiting, and less about the UK because you're from there.

In the US, most houses don't have flags, and most flags are on public buildings. I don't even know what you're referring to about ice cream cone holders, but I wouldn't be surprised if some brands used the stars and stripes for marketing purposes. It's pretty popular for people to display flags and nationality on their cars -- those living in the US who are from other countries or the children of immigrants will often stick a flag-sticker or symbol of their home country there.

I don't see what is so bad about flying a flag anyhow. Seems to some of you as if someone who puts a flag outside their house is deserving of some scorn.

Because it implies blind patriotism and usually an unpleasant sort of insular nationalism.

My travels in the US have been confined to LA and SF, but even there flag flying was blatant enough to be immediately notable to me. Flag flying here is a rarity.

Union Jack on a British house implies a signficant loss in the value of your neighbours house. Flying one doesnt make you an automatic twat but your average house buyer isnt going to take the chance.

Its different on national occassions like football games but I would be very wary living next to someone who did so on all round basis
