Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Depressing news but as the link in the op says, 2.5 million girls in Afghanistan are now at school. If they get sold out as part of a peace deal with the Taliban, then the invasion really will have been utterly pointless.
You can shoot a man but how do you defeat entrenched misogyny?

Yes, little has been achieved, let's get the fuck out, I agree...
Sorry for the future generations of even more repressed and mutilated women, but they will have to sort out their medieval barbarity themselves in future..

It's the men over there keeping them like that, and the logical conclusion is to make cheap woman only airline tickets available so women there can escape to the civilized world. And make it extra attractive by getting them hitched to a western man via one of these inter-ethnic dating sites?

Shoot the rest of the men, then find out that the gender role memes were spread evenly across the genders.Clinton Huxley wrote:Depressing news but as the link in the op says, 2.5 million girls in Afghanistan are now at school. What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

It is to be hoped that there has been a degree of 'consciousness raising' over the last decade or more and that will pay off in due course which will slowly build. Its not much but its better than nothing.

The bigger picture is that it shows the futility of nation building.

Is it worth the money and the dead? Not a chance.Rum wrote:It is to be hoped that there has been a degree of 'consciousness raising' over the last decade or more and that will pay off in due course which will slowly build. Its not much but its better than nothing.
Of course, though, I'm not even sure if that is what was being attempted.apophenia wrote:The bigger picture is that it shows the futility of nation building.

I am not suggesting it was worth the lives (sod the money). But I have seen attitudes to the rights of women change immeasurably in places, not least here in the UK, but more dramatically in Hong Kong as I grew up. The traditional Chinese attitude was almost as conservative as the Taliban's - well perhaps not quite as conservative, but getting there. Exposure to more liberal attitudes changed that radically over three or four decades.sandinista wrote:Is it worth the money and the dead? Looks like at the present rate of change we can pull out sometime in the 25th century.....Rum wrote:I am not suggesting it was worth the lives (sod the money). Until they get weaned off the medieval kiddy fiddlers rantings they will continue to treat women like shit. Shooting them isn't going to change that
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

What do you mean "sod the money"? Are you joking? Here in canada, instead of fighting this useless war for a decade that money could have been used for so many things, to help people in so many ways. Lets face it. This war was about one thing. George Bush's pride.
Osama Bin Laden kicked America's ass, well and truly, while George W was in the White House.
His ego couldn't take that, to go down in history with that on his record.
He had to get Osama, so he had to invade Afghanistan.
Anything else is just add-ons that people thought of later. Nobody cared that much about Afghan women's rights before 9/11.

While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
