MARYBOROUGH doctor Rob Carson was too busy bringing more life into the world yesterday to reflect on the fuss he had created by saving a boy's life with a household drill.

Sorry, this video is no longer available."I just delivered a beautiful baby girl one minute ago," he said when The Australian called yesterday. "But it's been hard to get much work done today thanks to you."
Yesterday's birth was natural, with no vacuum cleaner or other household appliances required, unlike last Friday when Dr Carson used a drill from a maintenance shed to save the life of 12-year-old Nicholas Rossi.
The Australian's exclusive story of how Dr Carson wielded a DeWalt drill to bore a hole in Nicholas's skull to relieve pressure and save his life echoed around the world yesterday.
"The BBC have called me and the London Times and media from everywhere are trying to contact me," said the modest general practitioner.
As helicopters carrying TV crews descended on the town of Maryborough, 170km northwest of Melbourne, a reluctant Dr Carson realised he would have to front the cameras to tell his story.
"I am no hero," he said. "My golf swing is no better and my little boat still leaks. I was just doing my job.
"There was not a lot of thinking involved -- you just have to do it. Otherwise, you will have a kid who will perish and the thought that he might die was far scarier than the idea of drilling."
Dr Carson and anaesthetist David Tynan faced a life-and-death situation last Friday when Nicholas began to lose consciousness several hours after he had fallen off his bike in an apparently minor accident. Dr Carson recognised signs of internal bleeding in the skull, which places acute pressure on the brain. Knowing the boy would die if he did not take urgent action, Dr Carson searched for a drill to bore into the boy's head and relieve the pressure on his brain.
But the small district hospital did not have neurological drills, so Dr Carson obtained a household drill, used for drilling wood, from the hospital maintenance area.
Instructed via telephone by Melbourne neurologist David Wallace, Dr Carson drilled a 1cm hole in Nicholas's head, removing a blood clot and saving his life.
"This story has put Maryborough on the map," said Susan Chadwick, who lives next door to the Rossi family.
