I'm not kidding. 2003-2008. Dover AFB, where the Air Force flies returning remains of soldiers killed overseas, including in battle. Sometimes people get blown apart, and sometimes parts aren't found until after the rest of the soldier is buried. What happened is, they cremated them; that's OK. But then they took the ashes to the landfill.
This was entirely during the Bush administration. This is how the US did business then. Somebody must have figured they were going to find out because the Obama administration was sure to follow up on the requests of dead soldiers' relatives to find out where the missing parts were, so they changed it; now, the ashes are scattered at sea. But no one in the Bush administration did any oversight, and no one who was working at Dover ever expected them to. So they didn't give a shit. And they took the remains of soldiers who died fighting for their country to the fucking dump. That's what they thought of soldiers in a Republican administration.
This is disgusting. I am sickened. If you want to know why I never ever vote for Republicans it's because shit like this always turns up from a Republican administration.

The point is not that "it's just dead meat". That "dead meat" was someone's son or daughter fighting on behalf of their country. Even if it was just a finger, it should have been honored in some way before being disposed, and absolutely NOT in general dump.

I agree. We dug up a couple of anonymous GIs and buried them with great honors at Arlington. what happened to my son's head? Sorry mam, but we had to torch it and dump it in a land fill, it didn't match any other body parts we found.
At the least they could do is collect the unidentifiable body parts, cremate them, and have an honorable good bye at sea. At the LEAST with a right hand on their forehead and heartfelt thanks for their sacrifice no matter who they belong to.

Because it's meaningless. Would you "honour" an amputated leg if the donor was still alive? What isn't a big deal to us as atheists still has a lot of meaning for others. I understand this may seem like hand-wringing over nothing but religious people don't. At least allow them to grieve!
As for the living man's amputated leg...I would honor it as much as he needs me to. He's the one who suffered the loss, and has to suffer the grief. If burial in a cemetery is what will help him overcome the horror of what he now must live with, then power to him.
One of the things that differentiates this war from all others in the past is the huge number of servicepeople they were able to save that would have died in the past. That means the population of disabled veterans has skyrocketed. We don't have a clue what an impact this is going to have over the next years. If we aren't already doing it, it's those same disabled veterans we are dumping on the street to homelessness, without the care, therapy and support they need.
As the lone and staunch pro-peace advocate in a neighborhood full of pro-war christian republicans, I remember vividly being accused of not supporting the troops and being unpatriotic...what hypocrites those republicans are.
