Of course it was illegal under British law. That's why the Brits were all like "Blimey! Dey is traitahs!"

But, it wasn't illegal under U.S. law because there was no U.S. And, the colonists were all like,"we is breaking away because ya'll is violatin' our rights as Englishmen!"

Who was right was determined on the battlefield. Had the colonists lost, any captured "founding fathers" would have been hanged, or shot, as traitors. As it happened, they won, so, they gets their independence and their declaration of independence was proven to be legal.

At the time, there was no applicable governing law among the nations that one could look to in order to decide a case of the legality of the declaration of independence. We had a conflict of opinion regarding what British law was on the subject. It could only be settled by force of arms.

It is humorous that breakaway nation states have to be 'recognized' these days. I wonder who would have recognized the U.S. besides France and Spain back then..
