Chatbot Passes Turing Test

Software tricks people into thinking it is human

Are you talking to a person or a machine? It could soon be harder to tell amid claims that software called Cleverbot has passed one of the key tests of artificial intelligence: the Turing test.

Proposed by British computer scientist Alan Turing in the 1950s, the test states that if a human talking to a machine believes the machine is human, it passes.

The Cleverbot test took place at the Techniche festival in Guwahati, India. Thirty volunteers conducted a typed 4-minute conversation with an unknown entity. Half of the volunteers spoke to humans while the rest chatted with Cleverbot. All the conversations were displayed on large screens for an audience to see.

Both the participants and the audience then rated the humanness of all the responses, with Cleverbot voted 59.3 per cent human, while the humans themselves were rated just 63.3 per cent human. A total of 1334 votes were cast – many more than in any previous Turing test, says Cleverbot's developer and AI specialist Rollo Carpenter.

"The world had better decide rather than me – it's either passed or it's come very close in this particular test," says Carpenter.

1334 votes? Couldn't they have got three more from somewhere?

The Turing test is a gedankenexperiment. A fair number of people thought an extremely simple program written in the sixties that just repeats back what you say as a question passed the "Turing test."

The average IQ is 100, as Azathoth just demonstrated; apparently the people who voted it was a human never tested by going outside the box because they never thought of it. Azathoth sussed it in two statements, because no human would ever say that.

So you were on the news.

I was talking to it in French when I said back to English it said nein I informed it that it was mistaken and that was German and it said, in German, "Yes I am speaking German"
It's not always a retard but other times I do wonder how it could be mistake for human.
It doesn't give correct answers but you can ask it correct things.

Yes I wondered about something like that - and the regular changes of who you're talking to prevent you from finding out the truth while also explaining the occasional non-sequiturs it comes out with.

But if you actually test it with any remotely abstract challenge, it fails.

I suppose essentially it is acting like an instant messaging middle man, except it's not instant because it learns replies and then gives them back to people later.

But as proof that it doesn't really work, one of the replies that it seems to have learnt is "That doesn't make any sense in response to what I just said to you." :hehe:
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Doesn't sound like it's much better than the one I was talking about. Hofstadter wrote about it in GEB IIRC.

"Cleverbot converses by searching through the records of its previous conversations and selecting an appropriate response to the comment."
Missing the fucking point!!!

It doesn't even try to do any abstraction or language interpretation. :nono:
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
