The world is becoming a more peaceful place..

You might not think so, given the murder and mayhem on TV every day, but the numbers of people killed in wars and conflicts has reduced remarkably over the decades. Here's a quote from a Newsletter I get about foreign policy.

"..the last decade has seen fewer war deaths than any decade in the past 100 years, based on data compiled by researchers Bethany Lacina and Nils Petter Gleditsch of the Peace Research Institute Oslo. Worldwide, deaths caused directly by war-related violence in the new century have averaged about 55,000 per year, just over half of what they were in the 1990s (100,000 a year), a third of what they were during the Cold War (180,000 a year from 1950 to 1989), and a hundredth of what they were in World War II. If you factor in the growing global population, which has nearly quadrupled in the last century, the decrease is even sharper. Far from being an age of killer anarchy, the 20 years since the Cold War ended have been an era of rapid progress toward peace".

Before a tsuanamai the sea goes out and the less knowledgeable play on the now peaceful beach. I've noticed a wave in the distance. But I'm on a hill away from you lot, and the peaceful appearing beach.

I blame Ak 47's damn things work for years even if used by a child ! now if Africa had more M16s or SA80s than people it wouldn't be a problem they would all be jammed by now, the plastic stocks would mostly be seen used as handles for farming tools.

I recently saw tests on a "thousand yard AK". They basically kept the AK mechanism and tossed everything else. Give my a Mattel gun every time over one of the Comrade's expediency guns.

The world is becoming a more peaceful place, actually. See Steve Pinker's 'The decline of violence'.

It is for the moment but wait until the over-crowding and shortages kick in.

Sadly there is still an economic war going on, and getting worse. At least six million children die of hunger every year (and by some estimates and definitions it's more like fifteen million). Completely preventable, but the rich still want to get richer.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

And the poor want to get richer. That's humans for you. They all want to get richer.
It's not an economic war. It's everybody for themselves. That's just human nature.

But the rich nations have the lowest birth rates.
If people in poor countries want to get richer, perhaps having huge families isn't the best strategy.
Why should richer countries facilitate all this?
The only foreign aid I would support would be free birth control for anybody who wants it in the very poor countries.
Buy a man a fish, and he can feed his family for a day. Buy him some condoms, and the same fish might last five days.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

I joined the Navy in 1999 and have been working on national security issues ever since.
