The Century Project
http://www.thecenturyproject.com/
I recently was shown this book by a woman in a soon-to-be-removed bathrobe. I took some photos of her, and while I briefly considered stealing the book, I took the 'high road' and ordered my own.
I looked it up online, and found the site above with some samples of the project (I guess they aren't exactly suitable for everyone's work, but there are plenty of other warnings)
Have a look at it. There are beautiful photos of naked ladies galore, most with a story penned by the model. These people are far from being Playboy models, though. His project includes women from age 0 to 90's.
I contacted the photographer (author?) and have had a bit of a chat with him. It turns out that there has been a religious crackpot organizing effective resistance to his show (it is an exhibit, as well as a book). Lobbying Universities does work, too. They won't stop a show, but they might not invite him again if they are going to have to defend themselves publicly.
I can't help but think that having an organized religious nut doing all that PR work should somehow pay off, but in reality, this show is not seen as often, or by as many, because of a religiot...Anyone have any ideas?

Fabulous photos with great stories to accompany them. I could look and read all day long. A really beautiful project.
I'd be interested to know exactly what this religiot is doing to limit and/or prevent the showings. It might be easier to come up with some good ideas if we "know the enemy".Cunt wrote:I can't help but think that having an organized religious nut doing all that PR work should somehow pay off, but in reality, this show is not seen as often, or by as many, because of a religiot...Anyone have any ideas?
Atheists have always argued that this world is all that we have, and that our duty is to one another to make the very most and best of it. ~Christopher Hitchens~

First off - before even going into that problem, it is impossible for Mr. Cordelle to get government funding for a project with a theme like this.maiforpeace wrote:Fabulous photos with great stories to accompany them. I could look and read all day long. A really beautiful project.

Second, he says that the opposing religious person has likely had a google alert set up such that whenever a school hosting an upcoming exhibit posts anything online, he is able to mount a campaign contacting administrators, trustees, alumni and even state legislatures (if the school is publicly funded). Of course he alerts the media.
Then he stirs up as much of a hornets nest as he can muster over the 'fact' that a child pornographer is coming to town (legislators, feminists, academics and law enforcement don't agree that he is a child pornographer, by the way)
In the resulting contraversy, Mr. Cordelle and his sensitive and beautiful show have won out. The schools have been supportive, media fair and the show goes on. Yet in spite of winning all those battles, The religiot might win the war.
Schools don't like to invite contraversy so, while he isn't being censored, he is invited to do a show less and less often.
I would like to see him get more shows. I think it is a great pile of nudie photos to share. The photographs themselves are skillfully executed and the accompanying writings interesting. The women are NOT presenting a plastic and false view of beauty.
Plus I hate to see religious conservatives successfully censoring ANYTHING.
Also, if he has something like a google alert, he may already have found this thread...

Looks interesting! I wonder if I could've gotten my wife involved in this?

Re: The Century Project
You still could! (and I hope she is a senior school administrator at a school which teaches womens studies AND wants to get nekkid)Ian wrote:Looks interesting! I wonder if I could've gotten my wife involved in this?
She only needs to SEE it to be 'involved', you know.

She's a schoolteacher. And English teacher, not a Womens Studies teacher, but she is a Vassar girl. Super-feminist. Just imagine Lisa Simpson grown up - that's my wife.Cunt wrote:You still could! Thanks for the interest, Bella Fortuna. I think I don't express as well the importance of such a project when I exclaim 'oooohhhh! NICE BOOBIES', so having your mature and considered comments may draw interest from other areas.
If you could please do me a favour, Bella Fortuna, make this more popular than Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler. Thanks very much.
I am not 'feminist' (more humanist, if you catch my drift), but I think this is necessary. Vital. I will be sharing it with my daughters, and anyone else who will hold still lol

I just sent an email to Mr. Cordelle expressing support and thanks. I like seeing women portrayed as real people in all their variety.

He deserves support. When I began to understand what was IN his book (project) I almost fell down from the beauty of it. The idea is almost more beautiful than the women who elected to participate.

Religious or not there is a case to be made that such photographs of naive children is exploitation of the very worst kind. I'd like to say that this model of site could also be potentialy a front for the networking & distribution of far worse material. I would hope the authorities do clamp down on this, and fully investigate any site holders plugging child porn as a art.
Here in the UK there is a review concerning the sexualization of children just about to be published - perhaps in this area the US will learn something from the Brits, with our prudish nature?

Re: The Century Project
Some years ago nudity and sexuality seem to have been conflated. It wasn't always the case that they were effectively synonymous. Arguably seeing a naked child as sexual is the problem of the observer not the child.Crumple wrote:Religious or not there is a case to be made that such photographs of naive children is exploitation of the very worst kind. As t the 'project' while it looks worthwhile I found it a bit clichéd and predictable TBH.

Exploitation? When the young people often volunteered themselves, and ALWAYS had their photographs removed from the exhibit if they wished?Crumple wrote:Religious or not there is a case to be made that such photographs of naive children is exploitation of the very worst kind. How is this more exploitation than any other photo of children? Let's use a McDonalds ad for comparison.

I don't understand your reference (?)Crumple wrote:Something to think about after being supermaxed I suppose?
If a given photo is not 'child porn', yet a pedophile masturbates furiously while staring at it, would that be reason to censor the photo? Or is there another problem perhaps?
What if the photo in question is something completely non-sexual?
