That's how they've always done it, as far back as I can remember. Same for Canada.Mallardz wrote:There was a piece on the Beeb (BBC) about how the Americans are really pissy about beating China so count overall medals not the amount of golds like other nations because then China are above them.

Odd, because it wouldn't be the first time the USA has lagged behind China (or before that, the USSR). Anyway, the USA may shortly overtake the Chinese using the traditional method ... sometime in the next hour or so. But for how long?Mallardz wrote:There was a piece on the Beeb (BBC) about how the Americans are really pissy about beating China so count overall medals not the amount of golds like other nations because then China are above them.

US doing well in the women's soccer against Japan - gorgeous second goal. Carly Lloyd has scored both - last one was a brilliant run.

United States -- 83 medals as of today.... Looks like our ladies soccer will give us number 84.
Bought the ref? Our ladies soccer team is far and away the best in the world. We win the gold every time, and ought to have won the World Cup last time. Today being the rematch of that painful defeat.

The US has so far and away more total medals, more gold medals, more silver medals, more bronze medals than anybody else in the world. This year, as of today, the US is ahead of China in total medals, and trailing golds 37-35. We're down by two, which should go to 1 in about 30 minutes or so when the women's soccer team beats Japan.

How has Conner MacLoud of the Clan MacLoud doing in the sword fighting competition?klr wrote:The good news: Ireland have won another medal - a bronze in individual show jumping.
The bad news: The rider is Cian O'Connor, who won the gold 8 years ago in Athens, only to be disqualified months later when the his horse was found to have tested positive for banned anti-psychotic drugs.

The only thing I've really watched is Taekwondo.
I've caught some brief moments of other things in passing.
I just considered it note worthy I wasn't speaking out against Americas method of counting medals.

Actually, the USA won the men's triple jump about 20 minutes ago - but the Chinese won another diving gold as well, so it's currently 38-36Coito ergo sum wrote:The US has so far and away more total medals, more gold medals, more silver medals, more bronze medals than anybody else in the world. The USA will win the decathlon as well. The women's soccer - which I'm watching on-line - is by no means over yet though.

The USA goalkeeper - who made a great save a few minutes ago - is the wonderfully named Hope Solo.
All over, 2-1 it is.

The US doesn't have "a method" of counting medals. The stats show total medals, and then a breakdown of golds, silver and bronze. I wasn't aware that countries had official "methods" in this regard.Mallardz wrote:The only thing I've really watched is Taekwondo.

The googles say US and China tied 37 each on gold medals. US with 86 total to China's 79. Dead heat.

I for one never when I was younger understood why here we didn't count the total medals ourselves, we'd certainly done in the standings. But yes the method/manner/whatever used to count medals varies which I found interesting based on the fact it was suggested it was so the USA could consider themselves above China but that appears to have been incorrect. Sorry I was misinformed...
