That point doesn't stand, because you don't actually "produce" cars at all. Mitsubishi produces cars, and the other two amount to silliness.

Also, we haven't even gotten to the fact that most American cars don't require or have 8 cylinders, nor are the presence of 8 cylinder cars a substantial factor in the price of gasoline.

Design =/= production. Mitsubishi designs the cars, Nedcar produces them for the Benelux.

As for the cylinder count, with that I mean that American engines are notorious for bad fuel economy because fuel used to cost jack shit. Now that that is changing the fuel economy is getting better, but this insistence of big cars and therefore big weight is not helping. Are you denying that?

We definitely have bigger cars, but that's because big cars are more useful and we spend a lot more time in cars than you folks. We like our standard of living, as I noted before. Bigger houses. Bigger cars. Greater availability of most things to more of our citizens. It's better for the people that fuel prices are lower. Higher gasoline prices hurts the average person.

We also tend to have higher crash test requirements than in Europe, so our cars have to be heavier due to added requirements for structural support, etc.

So, the government here took 5p per litre off the price, so what did the distributors do? They coincidentally increased their prices by 5p per litre.

I just love capitalism so much.

There is some evidence that "gas tax holidays" actually work... sometimes... in certain situations that may or may not actually apply to today's situation. Well, I take that back, they work all right, to drain the government's road repair coffers--to the tune of $10B for federal highways and something like $150M for a state like Illinois. A gas tax holiday is a good vote pandering idea, and if you subscribe to "starve the beast" theology it's a wonderful thing.

I heard about that, I thought it was despicable .. it's not a surprise that the oil companies would subvert a tax cut at the pumps; If the government removed ALL the tax from fuel the oil companies would use it as an excuse to put their prices up
And yes you can blame 'Wall Street' too since so much of the cost of a barrel of oil is due to speculation !

What if the price would have been even higher had the tax cut not occurred?

Surely, the claim can't be that taxes help keep prices down.... :ask:

Obama is in favor of higher gasoline prices anyway. That is what he wants for the US.
