Pot dealers should just be given a slap on the wrist. Enough to keep them discreet but not so much that they would do much violence to avoid getting busted. There are people out there who are really nice and make great and honest dealers, but I don't want them doing anything else for me, not even cooking my fries. Same with X, shrooms, LSD etc. Some people just flake out on everything that doesn't involve drugs and having a nice little niche for them to make an honest buck is the most persuasive argument for not completely legalizing pot I know of.

Simple solution. End incarceration for non-violent crimes. Create a system of tethered house arrest, where GPS encoded tethers or better yet, implants, are used to track the whereabouts of non-violent criminals. Have them restricted in movements outside of their jobs, and have them closely monitored with periodic check ins with a parole officer. That should free up plenty of space in the prison system.

It would also mean there would be a big increase in auto theft and similar crimes, since those people would never be incarcerated.

If a car is reported stolen in a given area, then the first thing that would be checked would be which GPS tethers were in the vicinity at the time, and they should be set to allow movement only to and from designated places at designated times.

You're not thinking this through. Sure, it's easier to find out he stole the car. Then what do you do? You can't imprison him. He can ignore your little GPS thing as much as he wants. GPS tethers aren't physical; they only work if the threat of imprisonment is still there.

I think if we all agree just to end prison terms for possession and personal use of drugs, and even sale of, drugs, a good deal of prison space would be freed up.

Our Federal Police are the equivalent of your FBI but without the budget.

Cost of Australian Federal Police: approximately $90 per Australian per year. Cost of U.S. FBI: approximately $27 per U.S. resident per year. Looks like the U.S. system is considerably more efficient there.

It puts you back to overcrowded prisons, since the prisons are mostly full of repeat offenders. We already give first time offenders probabion with little or no prison time.
