Nothing can be done. Once America becomes bankrupt all hell will break loose. The prisons will be emptied and the prisoners spill out onto the streets. Because of centralization of the prison population in the US they will form tight knit and dangerous social entities which will wreak havic on any attempt to recreate the former United States. They will use religion has a simple means to gather high level social & political power. The US will evolve into theocracy and theo-fascism. The small minority of atheists will be hunted down killed, just like happened in the Cultural Revolution to the intellectual classes in China. Atheists in america will become scapegoats for the fall from greatness. Are you ready for your future after the dollar default. :smoke:

One of Camping's flock for sure. Probably spent last Saturday huddled under a desk.

There are people out there who are really nice and make great and honest dealers, but I don't want them doing anything else for me, not even cooking my fries. Same with X, shrooms, LSD etc. Some people just flake out on everything that doesn't involve drugs and having a nice little niche for them to make an honest buck is the most persuasive argument for not completely legalizing pot I know of.
Interesting take.

We should invite them all here until they find a forum of their own.

However, Crumple's take is at least possible, however improbable, rather then Camping's impossible, laws of physics defying prophesies.

Create a system of tethered house arrest, where GPS encoded tethers or better yet, implants, are used to track the whereabouts of non-violent criminals. Have them restricted in movements outside of their jobs, and have them closely monitored with periodic check ins with a parole officer. That should free up plenty of space in the prison system.
It would also mean there would be a big increase in auto theft and similar crimes, since those people would never be incarcerated.
Except that they would be tethered by GPS monitoring systems. If a car is reported stolen in a given area, then the first thing that would be checked would be which GPS tethers were in the vicinity at the time, and they should be set to allow movement only to and from designated places at designated times.
You're not thinking this through. Sure, it's easier to find out he stole the car. Then what do you do? You can't imprison him. He can ignore your little GPS thing as much as he wants. GPS tethers aren't physical; they only work if the threat of imprisonment is still there.
I think if we all agree just to end prison terms for possession and personal use of drugs, and even sale of, drugs, a good deal of prison space would be freed up.
Retain imprisonment for sale of drugs to minors, and I'm on board.

We could use the tether as a half-way point. Non violent criminals get the tether initially, and if they commit crimes while tethered, then they get upped to prison.

How about an implant which exudes a substance that makes the person feel sick if he veers off approved pathways? He can go to and from work during certain hours, but if he tries to go somewhere else, then he winds up like like Little Alex in Clockwork Orange, retching on the ground all nauseous and with a pain in his Gulliver?

Nothing can be done, too late. America made the choice to incarcerate rather than educate it's lawless class. Everything to come will be a consequence. :coffee:

Cost of Australian Federal Police: approximately $90 per Australian per year. Cost of U.S. FBI: approximately $27 per U.S. resident per year. Looks like the U.S. system is considerably more efficient there.

It puts you back to overcrowded prisons, since the prisons are mostly full of repeat offenders. We already give first time offenders probabion with little or no prison time.

I imagine the people who object to overcrowding prisoners would object just as strongly to that solution.
