Re: The Coronavirus Thread
And even then, with very tight lockdown rules, infections of the delta strain are still popping up around Melbourne (at less that a tenth of the rate in NSW, I might add...). It only takes a few idiots not following the rules to allow the beast to escape...

The natural R-number of the original strain was around 3 - it's around 7 for the delta variant.

Yep, much harder to control this time around. In the long run, mass vaccination is the only way out, but we still need masks and reduced movement and mixing of people at the moment to stop it absolutely blooming...

There might be a slight downturn in the US in the next few weeks. But 50 000 cases a day, or less than half of now, is still a pandemic.

I saw a stat on the Facebooks the other day. Melbourne has suffered 200 days of lockdown since the pandemic started.

No big deal. I'm still in the cupboard under the stairs until mummy tells me it's safe to come out.

Texas Republican blames 'African Americans who have not been vaccinated' for state's COVID crisis
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick attacked Black Texans to deflect from criticism of GOP attacks on public health measures.
"Well, Laura," Patrick said to Fox News personality Laura Ingraham, "The COVID is spreading, particularly — most of the numbers are with the unvaccinated."
"And the Democrats like to blame Republicans on that, well, the biggest group in most states are African Americans who have not been vaccinated. Last time I checked, more than 90% of them vote for Democrats in their major cities and major counties," he said, hinting at why Texas Republicans are pursuing voter suppression bills.
He argued it was "up to the Democrats" despite the state of Texas being controlled by Republicans.
