On this forum we even have a person who has adopted the Clint Eastwood gunfighter image as his avatar - a clear sign that the fantasy has become part of him. I am somewhat less sure of Gawdzilla, though. I have a feeling (correct me if I am wrong) that he may have passed through and beyond the fantasy, by being exposed to the nasty reality of fighting and death by gunfire.

That's a facile assumption and pure nonsense. I am able to differentiate fantasy and reality. My choice of avatar (which has been Clint for a long time here) is not reflective of anything except my choices in avatars. Anything else you draw from it is pure imputation on your part. The fact that you come to such conclusions based on nothing at all save your own bias is in itself telling. Incidentally, you don't know much about me and my history because I don't talk much about it.

Stop making such tenuous assumptions, you'll fare better in rational discourse.

Four years of shooting with his son made me competent with a long gun and pistol. That stood me in good stead when I went off to the jungle.

This kind of bears out my point. The love of guns is one that is based on strong emotions, and the justification and rationalisation of that love is based also on emotional logic.

This thread discussion should be a friendly and polite discussion between intelligent peers. When it reverts to emotional outburst, you know there is more brewing than rational analysis of the issue being discussed.

Bear in mind though, that any response with emotion opens the possibility that the subject (gun ownership) is one more based on emotion than reason. So far in this thread, I have seen many responses by the gun enthusiasts that have to be called emotional. Including some directed at me after making comments that were quite impersonal.

I would hope we continue the debate in a manner that does not include personalities. I will criticise the use of guns, but try not to criticise the individuals.
