Let's be honest, the Democrats thought "shit we are in deep shit if we win this election. Two wars, torture, the patriot act and now the economy is falling about our arses, we can't seriously take power, we'll be fucked for decades. Put up a black guy and a chick no one will vote for that."

The Republicans thought. "Shit we've fucked up Caligula style. If we win this election they're going to hang us from lamp-posts and use us like fucking piñata. Put up that geriatric guy and that loony from Alaska, no one will vote for that."

That's my thinking anyway.

Actually, I think Obama's charisma carried the whole thing. I remember when I heard the speech he gave at the 2004 Democratic convention over the radio. I told the first person I saw "I just heard the first black president of the United States! He gave an awesome speech! I actually feel really good about being an American!"

Most of my acquaintances around here are dyed-in-the-wool rich white liberals, the Prius and Perrier Brigade. All for helping the previously disadvantaged and giving away free cellphones in order to feel better about owning a couple of tenement apartments and making a killing on Walmart stock (not that they'd ever shop there, but after all it's a good long-term growth investment). They LOVE O'Bammy, just fucking LOVE him. If you disagree with anything he does you're a racist; their grasp of actual issues is non-existent. It's all fluff and posturing. Fortunately, like most other low-information voters, they won't bother with the mid-term elections, might have to reschedule a nail appointment. Without the social cachet of voting for the first black president they'll go back to back-stabbing each other at the Anti-Fur Meeting and searching for organic free-range tofu at the farmer's market.
