Nor pilots. Nor the people who train pilots. This is why the Chinese carrier is "amusing".

I'd be interested to see what the plan is for maintaining the expertise through the "carrier-gap", as 'Zilla says, building the carrier is almost the easy part....

When can we expect delivery? Five years?Clinton Huxley wrote:We'd probably have to read the manuals...Gawdzilla wrote:We'll be waiting.Clinton Huxley wrote:Roundabouts. Hope the USN can hold the fort until the cavalry arrive...
BTW, will you still have anyone who knows how to conduct carrier ops then? I hear it's slightly more complicated that rowing a swan barge down the Avon.

I've been involved with flight ops on a LHA, and they're more complex than the layman can imagine. On 4.5 acres of sovereign US territory the matter gets even worse. Simply keeping up with the parking of the planes and moving them around to launch is beyond the capabilities of current shipboard computers. It takes a team of humans to do the job, and they train for years to master that little dosey-do.Clinton Huxley wrote:I'd be interested to see what the plan is for maintaining the expertise through the "carrier-gap", as 'Zilla says, building the carrier is almost the easy part....

From Aviation Week:-
French and US carriers? Wonder if they take off on the wrong side of the flight deck....Top Royal Navy and Royal Air Force officials are now working on a plan to maintain skills. A series of agreements is now being finalized to ensure that both piloting and deck-handling skills are maintained. Included is securing a commitment from the U.S. and France to embed U.K. staff on their carriers.

The islands were located so as to divert planes away from them if the wheels collapsed on landing and the propeller dug into the deck and pulled the bird around.Clinton Huxley wrote:From Aviation Week:-

And, as you've seen, we have endless footage of airplanes crashing into the island.

All we have to do is promise China we'll let them have the oil they need from a "New Iran" and they will sit it out.Clinton Huxley wrote:China also pretty dependent on selling stuff to the US...so they may huff and they may puff but that'll be allEddie wrote:Not really over Iran, but rather to protect their own interests in that region. They don't care who's in charge so long as they get their oil.

Maybe the US should only return the Iranians on the condition that Tehran admits that they're acting like a bunch of poop-heads, and that they'll retract their demand to keep US carriers out of the Gulf.January 6, 2012, 1:00 pm
U.S. Military Rescues Iranians Captured by Pirates
Thirteen Iranians whose fishing vessel had been seized by pirates in November were rescued by the United States Navy in the North Arabian Sea, the Pentagon announced on Friday. The pirates, who surrendered without a fight, were detained aboard the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, the military said, adding that the Iranians were on their way home.
It was the second time in a week that the carrier, which left the Persian Gulf for the North Arabian Sea late last month, found itself at the center of the news during a tense and very public standoff with Iran. On Tuesday the Iranian military warned that it would take unspecified action if the aircraft carrier returned to the gulf...

Nah, that won't happen. The Navy will just turn over the Iranian fishermen. Y'know why? 'Cause we're the good guys, believe it or not.

This may make events in the coming days even more shakey. It is only human to expect one good deed to lead to another but the Iranians are not going to give the US a cohesive handshake for a bunch of fishermen with the sanctions biting.

The fishermen will be shot when they are returned, for putting their government in an embarrassing position...

Who actually owns the Persian Gulf?
