I'm not sure where you get your news from but it seems pretty clear, unless hundreds of people are fibbing that he was a prolific sexual molester.

The police are now doing a criminal investigation rather than gathering information. Quite a few sexual offenders never admit to their behaviour incidentally, so being dead doesn't let him off!

My guess is that a fair few of those old Radio1 DJs took advantage of their positions to get inside the knickers of teen fans.

It was of course a different era and it is up for discussion as to how we judge the occasional groupy grope. Savile does appear to be in a category all his own though.

My suspicion is that he faked his own death, and left for the Vatican in a canoe.

The Observer has learned that several women producers who worked with the historian Adam Hart-Davis have accused him of making them uncomfortable with sexual comments and inappropriate touching. One alleges that in 2004 staff working with him were warned to keep their distance, even staying in a different hotel when on location. "I thought it was unfair that we would be warned, but a presenter wouldn't be expected to change his behaviour," she said.

Hart-Davis, 69, a second cousin of David Cameron and distantly related to the Queen, said that he had no knowledge of employees being warned to keep their distance from him.

"I have not worked for productions within the BBC for many years," he said. "I was never warned, although I was once informed by a senior figure that I had offended a female employee. I had not meant to do so, and I greatly regret having annoyed her."

I've just watched the Panorama special on the BBC. Saville is a de facto serial paedophile of the worst sort. The BBC has some serious questions to answer, in the immediate term for pulling a Newsnight special last year.
