There is a word for people who make comments like this. Starts with "w", ends with "r" and has a "k" in the middle.

Wait - yes - particularly appropriate in this case.

Is that why you're blind?
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

The 'blind' refers to the process of good science, as in double blind trial. Blinding myself to subjective influences and emotional influences, so that I can make rational conclusions.

Ian, I am not about to do an about face and say hand guns are OK.
But if you are going to insist on owning one, your method is the best way. So well done.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I own a S&W .40 semi-automatic handgun. I've had it for five years. I keep it in a keypad-activated safe in my bedroom, and only my wife and I know the combination. I bought it brand new, and it has never been fired.

That should be enough information for me to draw criticism from people on both sides of this debate. :{D
Yep, you're going to get some criticism here.

If you're going to own a gun for the purposes of protection, you have a responsibility to be familiar with that gun. Leaving it in a safe unfired for five years doesn't indicate that you are familiar with its workings, that you practice marksmanship so that you can actually hit your target, or that you have any reasonable certainty that the gun is in good working order.

You should be practicing target shooting at least once a month, and disassembling, cleaning and lubricating that often as well. If you're not willing to put in that time and effort, maybe firearm ownership isn't for you.

At least once a month? :hilarious:

Yeah... I have that kind of time! :hilarious:

Anyway, I'm a very good shot, and I've got the service medals to prove it.

As for maintenance on the gun, I admit that I haven't verified its working order. But I believe S&W is generally reliable, and every so often I take it out of the safe and check out the action on the moving parts. It still looks fine to me.

The biggest reason I haven't taken it to a range yet is because I can't stand gun culture and the redneck yokels who tend to manage and hang out at those places. I only own the gun so I don't ever have to worry about not owning one.

Yeah, at least once a month. Preferably more. Would you park a car in a garage and not drive for five years and assume that your skills wouldn't deteriorate?
Anyway, I'm a very good shot, and I've got the service medals to prove it.
You may have been when you were actually practicing regularly to keep your skills honed. Without practice, they don't stay that way.

Having a clean, properly lubricate firearm drastically reduces the chances of jams and rounds lodging in the barrel. They are precision machines and should be maintained as such.

I guess that depends on how you define 'redneck yokel'. I go to an indoor pistol range in the city that is frequented largely by the same kind of non-redneck white collar professionals that I am. We just tend to be people who think that part of being a responsible gun owner is regular practice to ensure that we have the skills to properly handle and operate said firearm.

I own my guns for fun.
I take the semi out nearly everyday just to handle it and play with it and practice aiming.
I go through my whole make-sure-it's-safe routine each time I take it out.
It rests beside me while I am at the desk.

It is possible that someone looking in my windows would find this unsettling--but then they shouldn't be looking in my windows.

I don't carry it around outside because I don't have my concealed carry permit yet although it is legal to open carry.
When I go to the range all guns are transported in their cases and in the trunk just because it is handy to do it that way and because it protects them.
When we return from the gun range we clean them all first thing.

The presence of guns is quite common around here, and I have found in conversing with a variety of people in a variety of situations, [rough stats] 3 out of five own guns, one out of seven have or have had carry permits and 4.5 out of five don't find any of this remarkable. These groups include men and women and it was a woman who first coached and advised me when I had questions about concealed carry.

I think we tend to be a lot less formal than many other parts of the country. We are rural and our gun ranges are mostly outdoor. People still have rifle racks in their trucks.

There are shooting sports and an archery club for kids.

This sounds to me just like the power based emotions I was discussing early. If holding and aiming the gun makes you feel good, then you fit perfectly my model of the gun owner who owns guns for purely emotional reasons - because it gives them a power kick.
