On its website , the Russian Ministry of Defense has reported on an exercise in the Baltic Fleet that ended on April 5 as “planned” in which anti-naval missile system forces were training against a threat from the sea.

According to the Ministry of Defense, about 10 military vehicles and about 100 soldiers took part in the exercise.

- If the information is correct, the exercise was about moving the equipment from the depot to the fire station area into operational readiness, Kajanmaa told Ilta-Sanomat.

How does this report differ from other big foreign and security policy reports that can take years to produce?

- Timeliness. This report is tied to this ongoing historic selection. Moreover, there is indeed such a special procedure here, i.e. these are not normally provided. Under normal circumstances, the government usually outlines these once during the term of office with a foreign and security policy report, but this did come separately and depending on the situation. That makes it special.

- It can be said that this was now given in a situation where there is a place of choice. This is a tool for that national and, in particular, parliamentary debate in Parliament and perhaps more broadly within and between parties.

This has been referred to as the so-called NATO report. What does this report now say about NATO?

- Quite a lot of attention is paid here to those good aspects. Of the other options, little is said to be the same level of security guarantees or others. It does not directly recommend anything, but indirectly it points quite strongly in the direction of membership that we are now undeniably heading in.

Finland has been some kind of Nato partner for years. Now they re running exercises with Nato troops.

The aim of the exercise is also to maintain and develop the competence and performance of the Army forces for the needs of domestic defense. The goal is to create and maintain international compatibility.

- The exercise supports the development of the capabilities of the national defense in many ways and the competence of the personnel, reservists and conscripts at the individual and military level, Maavoimat writes in its press release.

The total strength of the training forces is about 3,400 people. About 150 armored vehicles and about 300 other vehicles are involved in the exercise. The exercise is led by the Commander of the Armored Brigade, Colonel Rainer Kuosmanen.

In addition, international troops from Great Britain, Latvia, the USA and Estonia will take part in the exercise.
