It matters to 23 million people in Australia and a lot of the Pacific Island nations that we bully, and the 10's of thousands of Asylum seekers who need our protection (and now won't get it).

Well, I think the current Lab policy was to bully pacific island nations into taking the asylum seekers :hehe: I have to say I thought sending them all to Papua New Guinea was simply genius since only serious asylum seekers would take that offer.

It will probably get defeated in court. Although, I'm not sure what Abbott's plan is for them. Last I heard he was going to gas them or something.

I should also add that this result will matter to the estimated 150,000 people who will now die because we cut nearly $5 billion from our overseas aid budget so some rich people could get a tax cut and more handouts.

From what I have gleaned from Aussie politics, I can understand why. Anti-carbon emission taxes, anti-Asian immigrants, supported to the hilt by the Murdoch media ... and so on. I could probably guess the rest.

Uhm, yes. To begin with, the previous time the coalition parties were in government, they altered the tax scales to favour the already well-off, pulled bargaining rights of the workers out from under their feet by introducing legislation with the Orwellian moniker of "Work Choice", shovelled a few billion dollars to their mates like the head of Manildra, opposed environmental limits to what the mining industry could do in regard to the Great Barrier Reef...

Shall I go on? I'd rather not. Hey, rEv and fishie, let's find a rock to live under for the next three years, and let's all bring a lot of booze.

It will be interesting to see what sort of weird zoo will make up the Senate this time...

Funny (or not)... French news covered the election in Mali for days, but not a word about those in Oz.

My condolences. I'd offer refuge here, but it's even worse in the US.

You're welcome. I hope they get very little legislation passed. It will be better for your county, and it's people.

It sounds crazy. A couple of really weird parties - sporting fishers, motoring enthusiast, palmer party, liberal democracts.

IT is a gun-loving fringe party with a similar name to the new government, but the Liberal Democrats made no apologies for pulling off one of the biggest electoral flukes in Australian history.

Having sneaked 8.5 per cent of the vote - the backing of a staggering 283,000 people - in New South Wales, the six-year-old Liberal Democrats are set to gain at least one Senate seat, veteran election analyst Antony Green said.

Top candidate David Leyonhjelm, who believes we should carry handguns and that marijuana should be legal, admitted many punters had confused his fledgling party with the Liberals but said he was happy to take their votes.

"I don't think everybody who voted for us though they were voting for the Liberal Democrats - maybe some thought they were voting for the Democrats, or even the Liberal party," he said.

"We are not going to kid ourselves that 8.5 per cent of NSW thinks they were voting for the Liberal Democrats."

I'll say one thing, I don't think there can be too many politicians that can be so immune to embarrassing photos like Tony Abbot. I guess he is or was some volunteer lifeguard. And it's hard to top pics like these :funny:
