Okay, I've thought about it, and no. I can't vote Republican.

I'm a very strong supported in the idea of voting 3rd party. Sure, the nutbags will get in for a while, but if nothing shakes up the status quo, the centre of US politics will continue its inevitable march to the right. As you can see, Obama is to the right of Nixon and Bush Snr, and probably not that different to Reagan.

It's not always his opinions that he's expressing. Sometimes he posts and defends outrageous bollocks for the fun of watching the predictable outrage. To make him out like he's a victim or to compare what goes on here to actual bullying is rather unfair to real bullying victims I think.Drewish wrote:The bully tactics used against Seth have to make one (or at least any reasonable person) admire that he continues to attempt to express his opinion. That the atheists I know seem to be more predisposed to the group thought assery is seriously making me consider if I'm making a mistake backing the Libertarians over the Republicans.
In a lot of cases, he gets the reaction he's after for the sake of looking superior to the people he's angered and that's a bit different from someone who speaks what they believe in spite of the negative reaction they might get.
I'm not excusing anyone else's bad behaviour in reaction to him. But if you judge a person by the nature of the attacks against them, you might as well join A+ and become a disciple of Rebecca Watson.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I have similar opinions on some issues. You are incorrect in assuming they are ridiculous statements made just for effect.

So you make ridiculous statements because that's all you have?Drewish wrote:I have similar opinions on some issues. You are incorrect in assuming they are ridiculous statements made just for effect.
All rights have to be voted on. That's how they become rights.

I'll repeat: I'm not excusing anyone for abusing Seth or breaking the rules in any way. But if I gotta deal with a lot of poo flingery when I want to have an informed discussion, I might look for responsibility in more than one place.Drewish wrote:That... is a good point.

I'm tired of this "Seth doesn't actually believe the stuff he says" meme. I've spent years arguing with Seth about libertarianism and socialism and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that he believes everything he says. The reason I know this is that when you target some of the crazy things he says and start logically taking them to pieces he gets VERY upset and emotional. He absolutely believes this shit. And saying that he doesn't is just a lazy way of avoiding dealing with his crazy shit.

I tend to agree - the forum is not his only pulpit.

Re: The wall of shame - right wingdings got it real wrong
Some stuff that I find weird I think Seth believes, other stuff I think he just argues for sport. Some folks get more competitive than others. All of this stuff I'm saying is gleaned from what Seth himself has posted about his posting style. He was very up front about this stuff when he first joined the forum. He may not seriously believe everything he posts, but he takes the arguing seriously and that, I think, leads to a lot of the friction he encounters.rEvolutionist wrote:I'm tired of this "Seth doesn't actually believe the stuff he says" meme. You lie. I get upset when idiots on the Internet decide to attack me personally rather than sticking to the debate. I pretend to be upset sometimes in order to troll Netwits, but I have no emotion invested in an abstract argument with nitwits who are clearly my intellectual inferiors. I just enjoy toying with them and watching them dance as I pull their strings. The reason I know this is that when you target some of the crazy things he says and start logically taking them to pieces he gets VERY upset and emotional. You're one of the best puppets I know in that regard.
