The hidden agenda is the defence or expansion of a nation's power. That is how the US got itself entangled with Afghanistan in the first place. Its support of the Mujahideen to the tune of billions of dollars was a proxy war with the USSR. Things spun out of control when the USSR withdrew from Afghanistan, the Mujahideen were ousted by its own offspring, the Taliban, who became to be perceived the next threat after the destruction of the World Trade Centre.

Of course a lot of fuckups ensued. Instead of taking measures against Saudi Arabia and Pakistan the US decided to punish Afghanistan and Iraq.

I remember the first Iraq war (Kuwait version). I was working in Atlanta, and the night it all kicked off we had a poker game going at my apartment. There was a live feed from Baghdad, you could see the missiles hitting and bombs exploding. One of the youngsters kept watching the TV, saying "Jesus Christ, we're at war!".
