Down with fact-checking and 'reliable' information. It's all nothing more than a conspiracy to thwart free speech and stifle conservative voices, I tell you!

'X Is a Fog-of-War Machine'
Twitter has never been the most popular social media platform. It’s never been the coolest, it’s never had the most features, and it’s never been the biggest moneymaker. It has, at times, been the weirdest, and many groups given to high-velocity posting have maintained valuable communities there over the years. But Twitter’s X factor—sigh, pun intended—has always been its strength as a platform for news.

In moments of crisis, Twitter has been essential—no more so in times of bloody conflict. Not only do professional journalists relay on-the-ground realities, but so do eyewitnesses and citizen journalists. War being war, the fruits of Twitter’s role as an information funnel have never been perfect. But they’ve been a helpful first draft of the news.

In contrast, under the ownership of Elon Musk, who bought the platform for $44 billion last October, the platform now called X has become a vortex of false claims and doctored footage. It’s a fog-of-war machine.

That’s been the unmistakable reality in the days after Hamas’ deadly terrorist attack on Israeli civilians—a land, air, and sea operation that has killed at least 1,200 people in Israel and led to another 900 deaths in Gaza following Israel’s military retaliation.

Musk’s changes to the foundation of how Twitter works have not only rendered Twitter useless as a means of making sense of the conflict as (or even hours after) it unfolds, but made it actively counterproductive for users trying to figure out what’s going on. As Musk and Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino have rolled back the platform’s rules of engagement and rid their ranks of the content-moderation teams and tools that actually keep X trustworthy, they’ve also put in place a system that fundamentally incentivizes the spread of misinformation during times of mass panic and confusion, in part because X is now a platform that pays for viral content.

The end result is that Twitter, more so than any other platform right now, is fertile ground for a new kind of war profiteering.

On Oct. 8, the day after the initial Hamas attack, an account called @AGCast4 posted a video supposedly showing a Hamas rocket attack in Israel. The BBC journalist and fact-checker Shayan Sardarizadeh debunked it: The footage wasn’t from the ongoing conflict or any real-life war but from the video game Arma 3. The account was—and still is—verified with a blue check mark.

Two days later, the investigative outfit Bellingcat, known for its visual forensics work, had to debunk some fake news … about itself. A doctored “BBC” video was circulating on social media, claiming that Bellingcat’s journalists had confirmed Ukrainian weapon sales to Hamas. “We’ve reached no such conclusions or made any such claims,” Bellingcat’s official account wrote on Twitter. In a screenshot, Bellingcat showed that a Twitter account called Geopoliitics & Empire had shared the video. Like the account that posted video game footage, this account was also verified with a blue check mark. (The account owner deleted the post and called it an “honest mistake,” simultaneously posting a meme captioned “We are going to be famous.”)

...

It’s been mere days since the war broke out, but European regulators are already peeved with what they’ve seen. In a posted letter to Musk, European commissioner Thierry Breton asked the X owner to comply with the continent’s sweeping Digital Services Act. He urged the billionaire to respond within 24 hours with assurances that he’s taking the spread of “illegal content and disinformation” seriously or face legal penalties.

Musk responded, “Our policy is that everything is open source and transparent, an approach that I know the EU supports.”

I suppose it is a form of bias when somebody has put out so much vile, asinine, and monstrous crap that the media often give them a pass while holding everybody else to a different standard.
There’s a double standard for Democrats versus Republicans saying stupid things: when Democrats do it, it fills the news cycle for a week; when Republicans do it, we get silence. Donald Trump declared in writing in court this week that, as president, he didn’t have to “support” the Constitution of the US because the word “support” doesn’t appear in the Constitution or his oath of office. This is part of his effort to remain on the 2024 ballot in Colorado, where Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington (CREW) has sued to keep him off. The... lawsuit is based on the 14th Amendment’s Section 3 that forbids people from holding or running for office when they have engaged in insurrection or given aid and comfort to insurrectionists. Not a single Republican has spoken out about this outrage, and it’s conspicuously absent from our media. If Biden had made such an assertion it would be news from coast-to-coast for a week, but nary a peep from the mainstream media on this one. The double standard at work once again.

Have the Dems there admitted to how many feds were involved in the 'insurrection'? Or is that still a closely guarded secret?

Ironic - considering the image is posted from a corporate-sponsored site funded by a couple of oligarchs and quite a bit of venture capital.

You can't blame somebody for their laser focus on pushing bigotry and right wing propaganda. That's what's important in life. Weird astronomy stuff isn't worth paying attention to. So I don't fault Ms Ingraham for her aggressive ignorance, but it seems like her writing staff is made up of chuckleheads as well, which is just too bad.

'Laura Ingraham Owns Up to Mocking Biden for No Reason'
Fox News host Laura Ingraham acknowledged her mistake in mocking President Joe Biden’s reference Monday to the James Webb Space Telescope, having seemingly been unaware that a telescope by that name exists. In his remarks at the White House, Biden had mentioned the Webb telescope in the context of his executive order designed to combat the potential negative consequences of artificial intelligence. “Did he call it the ‘Webb telescope’? Isn’t it the Hubble? Is he thinking of Webb-Hubble? I don’t understand,” Ingraham said, bursting into laughter. Shortly after, the Fox host cleared things up. “There is a Webb telescope that I didn’t know about,” she told viewers. “I stand corrected by Joe Biden.”

Wow! A TV talking head made a mistake and admitted it?

Quick - someone get them fired! Cancel culture (a.k.a. cluster b personality scaled up) should be moving already.

Remember all those drug companies who got rich recently?

One of them got caught by O'Keefe on hidden camera, hilariously claiming he was a liar, to get out of trouble for what he had said already.

No, I don't remember that, and I don't care. I do remember O'Keefe and this old song he wrote. Ah the days gone by - the tunes worth keeping and noise we cast aside.

Yes, of course.

Why would it be interesting that a drug company executive confessed to...

Ah, nevermind. It couldn't be important. Don't forget to tune in to Fox or CNN to get the real story.

It's a nice song Cunt, but I doubt Fox and CNN play it because it's over 50 years old. Maybe you should give it a listen to get the "real story." :funny:
