Last year, shortly after arriving in Edinburgh, I got chatting to a retired American couple in a coffee shop. I was struck by something they said about Edinburgh, that they loved it because 'there's just so much history here' - as if history is located like an object in a particular place rather than being, you know, the past and shit. I understand Scutty's fascination with old and historical things, a fascination which seems to grow the closer I get to becoming history myself - it tells a story about the continuity of experiences and the ultimate futility and meaningless of existence that we can all relate to.
