Is it true the National Guard has been activated in every US state? Does that mean some sort of enforced quarantine? Their site tells me I'm fit enough, but too old (probably being in a foreign country also gives me a downcheck) but it doesn't have announcements of that sort.

It means nothing. 20 000 will die before Trump allows a quarantine.
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Good of you to blame Trump. I didn't know you thought he was guilty.

Yes, Trump is guilty. Presidents must undertake unpopular measures. Even if it loses the election. In fact, that is a good reason to limit presidents to 4 years.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I was on the bus on my way back to town today, reading my book on my phone and minding my own business, when the bloke in front of me started coughing - like really hacking it up. People were already standing but as it went on the woman next to him stood up and other passengers tried to back away a bit. And the chap next to me stood up too and tried to move back down the bus. The guy was having a real gasping, coughing fit. The bus seemed to become very quiet. He was putting his hand up and was obviously trying to say something. After a little while the coughing subsided, and he croaked out, "It's OK folks... just choking on a mint... went down the wrong way!" There was a small round of spontaneous nervous laughter. I guess we were all thinking the same thing. Still, the two standing passengers didn't sit back down again - caught in their own awkwardness I guess.

Exactly the same for me, haven't had the flu since I started getting vaccinated. We got it free at work (which was sensible for a school), and now, being over 65, I get it free from the government!Svartalf wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 4:20 pmIt's served me rather well since the NHS started giving it to me. before that I used to suffer from 1 to 3 bouts of flu every year . Brian, XR in Melbourne cancelled a rally planned for yesterday, given that medical authorities have told the government to ban mass gatherings over 500 people (Aussie rules will be played in empty stadiums...). I very much doubt whether our Autumn Rebellion will go ahead, at least in terms of mass protests. What's the word in your XR patch?

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I think it's fair to say that things are in a state of flux at the moment. Certain things at the planning stage while others are sorted and in place, but whether they go ahead or not is another thing entirely.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
We'll probably need to get creative in terms of what small numbers of people can do to have dramatic effect. I'm hoping our small XR group's street theatre outside the Siemens office will still go ahead next Friday - I want those Grim Reaper scythes to be used!

I canceled all my senior birder outings till May. I may just have a couple of unannounced trips in May. I have a mailing list and if I get another leader, I can have two groups of 3-4 plus the leader, for May. We are under the uni and they cancelled all these "groups" that meet in cafes to May.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Keep in mind that we don't quarantine thousands of people during the flu season. The quarantining and cancelling of major events will help slow corona down.laklak wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 2:08 pmFor comparison, here's the current 2019 /2020 flu season statistics for the U.S.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/pr ... imates.htm
39,000,000 - 42,000,000 cases
16,000,000 - 23,000,000 doctor visits
350,000 - 620,000 hospitalizations
20,000 - 52,000 deaths.
If this thing spreads as easily as the flu and has the lethality rates we've seen so far we're in trouble. Even at one percent and the lower number of cases that's 390,000 dead.
I should have been an undertaker.
