The suzerain Trump
Re: The suzerain Trump
It seems most everyone is taken a bit aback by his inaugural speech. Apparently he wrote it himself.

I don't think Trump is interested in sabotaging democracy; the global economy is another matter. He made the declaration of America's economic secession from the world with his lines "Buy American. Hire American."
It looks like we can look forward to 4 years of American isolationism, American exceptionalism, and American unilateralism.

Well, I listened to his speech and he's certainly set the conditions by which he will be measured and judged.

I never listened to it. Our tv is quite new.

Well, since most of the folks out there across the ponds seem not to like us too much these days, isolationism should strike those folks as rather refreshing.Śiva wrote:I don't think Trump is interested in sabotaging democracy; the global economy is another matter. And, since most Europeans I hear from on message boards seem to view America as rather unexceptional, dim, uncivilized, and even a terrible/dangerous place to live, it would seem that whatever misconception the Americans may have about themselves is of no relevance to the better angels of the world.
And, since Trump is not interested in meddling in the rest of the world, with the one exception of eliminating ISIS, it would seem rather beneficial to the civilzed folks that the US will be allowing the better angels to engage in their multilateral attention to world issues. No more fuck ups from us dimwits here in the States.
G'day!

After Trump, I think we'll have Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi running for office for the Democrats, to finally secure that "first woman President" prize the Democrats have had their eye on....Svartalf wrote:Let's just hope we can celebrate that again in 4 yearsŚiva wrote:"Today we celebrate one of democracy's core principles: The peaceful transfer of power."

Donald Trump Inauguration: White House website removes Obama climate change initiatives
Washington: Just moments after President Donald Trump took the oath of office on Friday, the official White House website was transformed to remove all traces of former president Barack Obama's climate change initiatives and to reinforce border protection policies...
...the climate change web page that existed under Mr Obama was immediately scrubbed, with no mention of climate change under Mr Trump's energy plan.
Instead, he vowed to eliminate "harmful and unnecessary policies" such as the Climate Action Plan and the Waters of the United States rule.
The first represents a variety of efforts Mr Obama pursued to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions while the second is a rule issued by the Environmental Protection Agency to protect not only the largest waterways but smaller tributaries that others believe should fall under the jurisdiction of states rather than the federal government.
Mr Trump plans to boost the oil and gas industries to help fund his infrastructure initiatives.

Trump administration puts NAFTA on notice
The White House confirmed U.S. President Donald Trump’s intent to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement just minutes after the 45th president finished his inauguration speech Friday.
An announcement on the updated White House website also promises to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact signed last year by 14 countries, including Canada. Trump repeatedly vowed during his campaign to fix or abandon trade deals he said had cost the U.S. jobs.
“If our partners refuse a renegotiation that gives American workers a fair deal, then the President will give notice of the United States’ intent to withdraw from NAFTA,” the statement reads.

Together! Except for Mexicans. And Muslims. And liberals.
Together, we will make America strong again. We will make America wealthy again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And yes, together we will make America great again.

Oh, the civility! Oh, the rhetoric!
You can't just say anything you want, you might "microaggress" people and you might offend them! Let's go to a safe room! You can't have Milo Yiannopoulis speak on campus, because it makes students "feel unsafe"...
Ok, guys! Let's go find the oppressors and throw batteries at them! Beat them with flagpoles! Pelt them with eggs! That's no big deal! W'ere punching up! Speaking truth to power!

His appeal is encapsulated in the slogan "America First", which he used in his speech today. One of tge lies of the campaign was that the US somehow always found itself the minor partner in trade agreements. I hope he can live up to his rhetoric on trade, because if the world doesn't want to cut a deal with America on Trump's terms someone somewhere is going to find the nation with the most powerful military force in the history of forever giving them a very stern look.
