Re: All Things Canada Eh
I guess that depends on the situation. Was there an inquiry afterwards?

I don't think so. Barely saw anything on it.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sat Apr 19, 2025 4:17 pmI guess that depends on the situation. Was there an inquiry afterwards?
It's from Fox news, so basically the 'Mercan version of Rebel.

Police were asked by Rebel News to comment on the incident. "Can you kindly explain how it was my colleague to my right here, Alexa Lavoie was shot point-blank with a tear gas canister doing some very painful damage to her. What was the reason for that?"
Ottawa Police interim Chief Steve Bell responded he was "unfamiliar" with the incident, but noted "the vast majority of our members have remained extremely professional."

I think we hold the same contempt for most of the political parties. I just go one party further.
Re: All Things Canada Eh
Who is we?... I only hold current cons in well deserved contempt.

Looking like the left(ish) is going to prevail in Canada and Australia. Not left enough, but a fuck load better than the conservatives.

Re: All Things Canada Eh
Australian left a bit more left than Canada. We had a strong left party that almost formed a gov a while back but for the death of the very popular leader at a young age.
We also had from the same party " the best prime minister Canada never got"....also a victim of the grim reaper but his wife that time. He was well loved and respected but his heart went of politics on his wife's death.
There have been quite a few "bright lights" from the party that have under served Canada due to FPTP voting.

For his humanitarian work in Africa and the United Nations, the governor general of Canada appointed Lewis a Companion of the Order of Canada on October 10, 2002.[23] His investiture into the order was held on October 23, 2003.[23] He delivered the annual Massey Lecture in 2005, and it was published in book form under the title Race Against Time: Searching for Hope in AIDS-Ravaged Africa. The book consists of five lectures that depict the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa, critically examining the international community's passivity as a contributing factor.
In 2006, two new secondary schools in the Toronto area were named after Lewis: Stephen Lewis Secondary School in Mississauga and Stephen Lewis Secondary School in Vaughan. The Mississauga school has a focus on educating students on issues relating to social justice and global citizenship to enhance the Ontario Curriculum.
In 2007, Lewis received the World Citizenship Award from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, as well as the Health and Human Rights Leadership Award from Doctors of the World-USA. Lewis was also invested as a Knight Commander of the Most Dignified Order of Moshoeshoe by King Letsie III of Lesotho.[24][25][26]
In 2010, Forbes magazine, in conjunction with their 2010 list of World's Most Powerful People, asked the feminist playwright Eve Ensler to identify Worlds' Most Powerful Feminists. She named Stephen Lewis as one of her top seven.[27]
In 2013, The Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto presented Stephen Lewis with the Bonham Centre Award, recognizing his contribution to the advancement and education of human rights issues surrounding sexual education.[28]
Lewis has 33 honorary degrees, 32 from Canadian institutions. This is one of the largest number held by any Canadian.[29]

In both electorates the conservatives had a commanding lead a few months ago. Then came Trump like a wrecking ball. I wonder if it's the Trump effect poisoning the conservative brand by association?

Trump’s chaotic trade war, abuse of allies and erratic behaviour has not just up-ended global financial markets, it has overturned political assumptions.
Being seen as sympathetic or close to Trump is no longer a political asset.

Re: All Things Canada Eh
well, I don't really like conservatives in general, but I still hope there are some that have not been tainted by the thatcher/reagan insanity that has made the US and UK brands not only unpalatable, but straight deserving of being cast to the trash bin... and I'm a bit sad that the rump debacle should make them guilty by association without even certitude that they are THAT kind of conservative...

Re: All Things Canada Eh
A comforting thought Svarty, but those 'good' conservatives are still Liberals in the classical sense, and therefore usually branded as radical lefties by the neolibs and whatever we're calling this post-neolib, proto-fascist, chaos-politics thing that's emerging from the wallets of the over-privileged but morally-stultified and emotionally-under-resourced super-rich.

Without searching the forum, I strongly suspect that the above post has reached more hyphens than would seem humanly possible!

Re: All Things Canada Eh
Once upon a time the con movement in Canada was the Progressive Conservatives which by and large were tolerable right of centre.
Then came the Reform Party riding out of the west to clean the swamp and refuse their pensions.
Well none of that happened but the "Progressive" bit did get "cleaned out" federally with a real soap opera in the process.
However the Progressive Conservatives remain at the provincial level and two of the Premieres, Nova Scotia and Ontario ....both Progressives refused to endorse Poliviere or to campaign for him.
Ontario is of course the 900lb gorilla and Ontario tends to elect the opposite party that is in power in the province to the federal parliament.....and they are about to do the same again in about 24 hours.

The street attack in Vancouver is truly appalling.
Can't help the nativist right either, right on the eve of the election. I might be wrong, but I don't think Canadians want to buy into an overly racialised politics based in white grievance and assumed white supremecy.
