Roy Moore's alleged pursuit of a young girl is the symptom of a larger problem in evangelical circles

We need to talk about the segment of American culture that probably doesn't think the allegations against Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore are particularly damning, the segment that will blanch at only two accusations in the Washington Post expose: He pursued a 14-year-old-girl without first getting her parents' permission, and he initiated sexual contact outside of marriage. That segment is evangelicalism. In that world, which Moore travels in and I grew up in, 14-year-old girls courting adult men isn't uncommon.

I use the phrase "14-year-old girls courting adult men," rather than "adult men courting 14-year-old girls," for a reason: Evangelicals routinely frame these relationships in those terms. That's how I was introduced to these relationships as a home-schooled teenager in the 1990s, and it's the language that my friends and I would use to discuss girls we knew who were in parent-sanctioned relationships with older men.

While the legal position is perfectly clear, the moral case about under age sex is less so.
A lot of 14 year old girls are shagging their brains out by that age. Another lot are not.

We draw an artificial line so that there can be a law, and that's the right thing to do. But just because that law is there, it doesn't mean that the law makes something moral or immoral.
It's the other way around.

In Britain, it's perfectly legal for a man of sixty to have sex with a girl of 16. Age difference is not a legal factor, it's only the minimum age of one party that counts. And that, as I said, is an artificial line drawn so as to have an enforceable law.

So while the law is clear, the moral outrage is a bit comical. Lots of girls have experiences like this and just giggle about it years later, unless the man is running for the senate.

Turns out that The Washington Post has been making robocalls soliciting Moore accusers, offering payment.

Not only that, but it also turns out that one of the women who's already come forward "was offered $1,000 by The Washington Post to go public with her claims."

That's how you feel about it, and I don't disagree. However, right and wrong don't ACTUALLY exist, except as a consensus of opinion of society.

In law, as I said, the only measure of right or wrong is the age of the younger party. The age of the 30 year old is irrelevant. Move it up two years, and a 32 year old judge fucking a 16 year old girl is perfectly legal.
If it is immoral, why is it still legal?

The truth is, it's another grey area for morals, when we crave for black and white.
