There is a meme of shouting arabic slogans and killing random infidels, a meme deriving from a tiny minority of rabid muslims and a particular interpretation of their holy texts. There are some who are totally committed to that meme, and deliberately work to multiply it, but it is not surprising that a version of the meme can and will infect those on the margins, those with mental health issues.

The meme, and those who consciously promoted it cannot be held blameless, even though the infected person may be intellectually challenged, and not part of an organised group...

In a ideal world. As it we have massive sums spent by the advertising industry to adjust our malleable personal opinions, our views are forever in the hands of expert manipulators. What we do then follows on from that. And the vulnerable need protection from that. There needs to be laws to prevent the religious proselytizing to the learning disabled, the mentally ill and children. It is a form of abuse of authority. Emotional abuse that can have deadly consequences.

No. The guy was not homeless. He was not on meds as far as we know. He could have staid at the mental hospital. He wasn't asked to leave. He did that on his own plan.

Categorising religious adherence as a mental illness or as emotional abuse doesn't change the fact that we are responsible for our actions. If the religious are not responsible for their actions then what? Confine them to camp for their own and our safety? Put them out of their 'misery'? I'd totally agree that children shouldn't be proselytized to, but most of that happens at home doesn't it? What we need is a separation between the public sphere and the private, where religion dwells within the private and remains there.
