He's certainly not coming back with a bunch of roses and an apology.
As I read it, both of them were drunk/high, so both of them had their cognitive capabilities dulled to some degree.

And maybe the victim didn't account for the fact that his 'friend' was a trigger happy nutjob who would actually shoot (to kill) him. Sane people normally don't do that, even when drunk.
And neither do people in societies where guns are rare...
Nope. They just stab or beat them to death instead. Yeah... I'd totally rather go out that way.
This (the point I'm going to mention) gets raised in these debates from time to time, and perhaps there's an element of truth to it: The US is a more violent society than other places like Canada, Australia, Switzerland etc. So it might indeed be the case in the US that if these nuts didn't have access to guns, they'd get a hammer or a knife or whatever and beat the shit out of the other person. In Australia, we just don't see violence as the way to solve a disagreement. Sure, we punch the shit out of each other when we are drunk, but that's usually based on bravado at a pub. I've rarely seen violence at any private party here. It just doesn't happen (that much).

At least with no gun present, the person being attacked has a fighting chance.

Ridiculous anyway as people are more likely to give in to the heat of the moment with the relative ease, convenience, and personal remove of a gun versus getting in there in close quarters and risking life and limb.

33-year-old Douglas Yim was also found guilty Tuesday of ... mayhem
Well, if you're gonna be found guilty of something, it might as well be something that sounds cool.

Most people certainly just leave. And might even apologise the next day, after sobering up. And nobody without access to a gun reappears with one.
I've drank and gotten into arguments. I've never reappeared with a gun and shot anyone.
So why would you think the victim would assume that the other guy is going to get a gun and shoot him?
Sorry, I guess I shouldn't give people so much credit and think that they might actually be aware of the character of the people they associate with.

My mistake.
