The problem as I see it is that politics this days only has influence at the margins. Multinational companies and large corporations control the economy. Capitalism is well in control these days and looks unlikely to be weakened in the foreseeable future. In those circumstances even a Labour government is afraid to upset those with the real economic controls in case they move their resources (means of production, services, jobs) elsewhere where the profits are better. They are already chasing those profits by constantly and dynamically seeking the cheapest source of labour.
While this state of affairs remains people in countries like ours will inevitably become poorer. One can see it happening in Europe and I suspect America right now.
