Re: Ted Nugent vs Obama
Coito ergo sum wrote:Rock legend Ted Nugent is firing back at reports the U.S. Secret Service is targeting him for a harshly critical speech of the Obama administration he delivered at the National Rifle Association over the weekend.
The longtime advocate for gun rights compared President Obama and the Democrats to an unwanted animal visiting someone’s home.“It isn’t the enemy that ruined America,” he said, affirming his support for Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney.
“It’s good people who bent over and let the enemy in. If the coyote’s in your living room pissing on your couch, it’s not the coyote’s fault. It’s your fault for not shooting him.”
Nugent had said in his address that “if Barack Obama becomes the president in November, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”
“If you can’t go home and get everybody in your lives to clean house in this vile, evil, America-hating administration, I don’t even know what you’re made of,” he said at the NRA.
Nugent’s words got even more descriptive at times, calling Obama a criminal and saying his administration is “wiping its a– with the Constitution.”

Did anyone hear any news about the Secret Service going after Jesse Jackson for saying this? Sounds more directly threatening than what Nugent said.

He said he wants to. I want to rob every bank in every nation on earth. That doesn't mark me as a security threat because I haven't said that I'll either be multi-trillionaire or in jail by this time next year.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

That depends. Does Jesse own a shitload of surgical impedimenta? Was he speaking at a surgeon's convention?
Ted owns a shitload of guns, has a following made up of gun-owners so dedicated as to spend money on NRA memberships, and was speaking at an NRA convention when he compared Obama to a coyote that ought to be shot.
Now, which one do you think was more "directly threatening"?

Re: Ted Nugent vs Obama
I honestly don't think either of them were even remotely threatening, but the Secret Service is supposed to investigate anyone who makes threatening statements about the POTUS, and I think Jackson's is the more explicit.
'It's your fault for not shooting him' isn't an explicit threat.
'If yada yada...I'll either be dead or in jail next year' isn't an explicit threat.
'I want to cut his nuts off' is right up there, maybe just one step below 'I'm going to cut his nuts off.'
Who says it, wrt political leanings, lifestyle, race, etc, should be irrelevant. Nugent, to my knowledge, has never been convicted of assault, and owning guns and loving hunting doesn't mean you are any more prone to murder or assassination than someone who doesn't do those things. Nugent was investigated for vague insinuations because of his political leanings and Jackson's very explicit language was ignored probably for the same reason.

Re: Ted Nugent vs Obama
I still disagree with you there FBM. An expression of wanting to do violence when you think the microphone is off is a far cry from an intentional expression of intent to do a dangerous criminal act (what else gets you dead or in jail) if an election doesn't go your way.
To me it's like the difference between "Dude, I'm pissed off and I really want to dot your eye right now!" and "You're pissing me off and you'd better quit before there's blood on the carpet!". One's about desire and the other's about action. Also, someone shooting the POTUS is a lot more of a realistic worry to the SS than someone cutting his balls off.

Re: Ted Nugent vs Obama
The big difference is the audience.
A private comment is a private comment.
I wouldn't put it past Jesse Jackson to leave the microphone on "accidentally on purpose" though.
But giving Jackson the benefit of the doubt, Nugent's comments were in a different class, because they were premeditated and aimed at a large audience. That makes it a political speech, as opposed to an off-the-cuff private remark.
He might claim that it wasn't meant seriously. I'm sure that windbag wouldn't have the balls to do anything about it. But I bet he wouldn't mind if some loony did.
There would be ample justification for refusing HIM a visa to the UK.
Not that the Brits go for his brand of shit. They go for different shit.
Shooting Obama is much more viable.

I have to agree. It's not a very practical plan, and would probably fail before he got Obama's zip down.Robert_S wrote:Also, someone shooting the POTUS is a lot more of a realistic worry to the SS than someone cutting his balls off.

Re: Ted Nugent vs Obama
Both should be treated as potential threats to the POTUS, even though nobody should've taken either of them seriously. As much as I disagree with Nugent's politics, his freedom of speech is no less guaranteed by the constitution than Jackson's. Jackson's status as a Democrat and a religious figure is the only reason they let him slide. Nugent got harassed simply because of his political affiliation, as far as I can tell. Nugent's comments were much more vague and open to interpretation than Jackson's expressed desire to castrate Obama. I like Obama and I'm glad he's the POTUS, but the Secret Service and the hypocritical, self-serving gummit industry as a whole? That's a different story. They exist to serve the 1% and don't give a rat's ass about the public welfare. As far as I can tell.

Re: Ted Nugent vs Obama
I disagree. Shorn of context, you might have a point, but "cut his nuts off" is a fairly common term meaning to weaken or undermine a man. Because people don't have a habit of holding a man down and literally cutting off his testicles when they are angry at him (not to mention the sheer impracticality of doing so to a candidate benefiting from armed guard), it is clear that his speech was figurative, and not literal.FBM wrote:I honestly don't think either of them were even remotely threatening, but the Secret Service is supposed to investigate anyone who makes threatening statements about the POTUS, and I think Jackson's is the more explicit.

Nugent was investigated for vague insinuations because of his political leanings and Jackson's very explicit language was ignored probably for the same reason.
And because Jackson wasn't addressing a crowd of people who were openly hostile to Obama, but rather, using a figure of speech in what he thought was a private exchange, it seems clear that Jackson wasn't being literal in urging Obama's castration. (Also, I would think that the Secret Service under Bush [who was Chief Executive when Jackson made his remarks] would have been delighted to throw mud on a target such as Jackson -- not only a symbol of extreme left idiocy, but one who was even then losing support as his constituency aged.)
Also, no one here is arguing "owning guns and loving hunting doesn't mean you are any more prone to murder or assassination than someone who doesn't do those things"; that's a straw-man.
I should just note, here, that I don't think Nugent was actually advocating for Obama's assassination. I do think he was being extraordinarily thoughtless.
Nugent supporters complaining about investigating his comments about "shooting" the problem in regard to politics, at a gun convention, are in essence complaining about the Secret Service profiling Nugent. Considering how many of them advocate for profiling of potential suspects at airports or behinds the wheels of fancy automobiles, the irony is rich.
I doubt his status as a Democrat had any bearing on the matter; Jackson's comments were made while we had a Republican Chief Executive. You'd think the Secret Service would be more and not less apt to go after him, as a Democrat.FBM wrote:Jackson's status as a Democrat and a religious figure is the only reason they let him slide.

Good points, Thump. And the others, too. I've got my orthopedic shoes on today, I guess. (I stand corrected.)

If Nugent was a Muslim, and said the same at a prayer meeting, it would have been a totally different story.
